#AceBreakingNews – BRITAIN – September 26 – British police arrested on Friday two men as part of an operation into Islamist-related militancy, Reuters said.
The two men were arrested on the M6 motorway in England by counter-terrorism officers, bringing the total number of people detained in the operation to 11 over two days.
Spain’s Interior Ministry said on Friday that Spanish and Moroccan police have arrested nine people suspected of belonging to a militant cell linked to the Islamic State (IS) group.
In Malaysia, police have detained three Muslim men suspected of wanting to go to Syria to join the IS.
#AceWorldNews – AFGHANISTAN – May 28 – Two Americans have been injured in an attack on a US consulate vehicle in western Herat province in Afghanistan, the US embassy said on Wednesday.
Both were receiving treatment at a Spanish hospital in the province, Reuters reported. “The US government is working closely with Afghan authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.
The attack comes a day after President Barack Obama announced that he plans for almost 10,000 American troops to remain in the country in 2015 if the Afghan government signs a security agreement.
Washington and its NATO allies will formally halt combat operations in Afghanistan at the end of this year.

#AceWorldNews – CATALONIA – March 30 – Spanish government cannot allow Catalonia to hold a referendum on independence since that procedure is not provided for by the law, Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria has said, reports Itar-Tass.
While the current government is in power, such a law will not be passed, as “a part of the population cannot decide the question of national sovereignty for others,” she added.
The official was speaking in Barcelona at a demonstration of the ruling party on Sunday.
Saenz noted though that the government is ready for dialogue with Catalonia on various issues, as long as it is in line with the constitution.
She reiterated that if Catalonia quits Spain, it will also stop being a member of the EU, may have to quit the eurozone as well as the Schengen area.

Correspondent Javier Espinosa and photographer Ricardo Garcia Vilanova were set free Saturday and are reportedly in good health, according to Reuters.
The two men were kidnapped on Sept. 16 in the province of Raqqa, close to the Turkish border.
AceWorldNews – MADRID – March 30 – Police in Madrid scuffled with protesters demonstrating against the Spanish monarchy in Madrid, arresting one person and injuring at least eight.
According to (FoxNews) Hundreds of protesters have marched in Spain’s capital to call for the abdication of King Juan Carlos, the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a republic.
A large police presence blocked access to the Royal Palace, where the demonstration was due to end in a rally, with metal barriers and police vans.
Protesters marched under banners reading “Checkmate to the King” and chanting “Tomorrow, Spain will be a Republic.”
Madrid (CNN) — Clean-up was under way Sunday on damage to bus stops and outdoor cafes in central Madrid, after austerity protests turned violent Saturday night in the Spanish capital and left 101 people injured. There were 24 arrests.
The injured included 67 national and municipal police officers and 34 demonstrators. Eleven were taken to hospitals, including a national police officer who was kicked in the head, lost his riot helmet and lost consciousness, spokesmen for the central and Madrid city governments said.
Police say the protesters failed to inform the authorities of their itinerary, thus making the demonstration illegal.
#AceWorldNews – SPAIN – March 25 – Spain’s Constitutional Court ruled Tuesday that a referendum in Catalonia on independence from the rest of the country would violate the supreme law.
Judges said that a region within Spain “cannot unilaterally call a referendum on self-determination.” A poll published last week by the Centre for Opinion Studies found that up the 60 percent of Catalonians’ support independence.
The Spanish authorities have said they will discuss whether to allow Catalonia to hold a referendum or not in a parliamentary debate scheduled for April 8.

#AceWorldNews – SPAIN – 24 March – Former Spanish Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez, known for introducing Spain to democracy and becoming the first elected premier after the death of General Francisco Franco, passed away on Sunday at the age of 81.
Suarez died in a Madrid hospital after being admitted with pneumonia on Monday, AFP quoted family spokesman Fermin Urbiola as saying. Suarez suffered from Alzheimer’s disease which was diagnosed 11 years ago.
#AceWorldNews says that Spanish war correspondent Marc Marginedas, kidnapped by Islamist militants in Syria in September, has been freed.
He has crossed the border into Turkey, where he has undergone medical tests under the watch of Spanish state officials, according to his newspaper El Periodico.
The newspaper gave no details on his release. Marginedas has spoken by phone with his family in Barcelona and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Rajoy said Marginedas “is in reasonable shape, he is happy.”

Potential migrants make frequent attempts to cross the border separating the two, often risking their lives to access the territory which lies just 15 km over the sea from Spain.
Meanwhile, over 1,000 people were rescued from rafts near the Italian island of Lampedusa by Italy’s navy. The country is another major migrant point of entry into Europe and over 200 died in October last year alone, only a kilometre from the coast.
Sea crossings tripled last year, thought to be prompted by regional instability, including civil war in Syria.

Drifting after its engine failed, the Luno crashed into the breakwater at Anglet. All 12 crew members were winched to safety by helicopter.
