(LONDON) Court Report: The gang who fatally stabbed Joshua White in Hackney in 2019 have been convicted of his murder and of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) in relation to another man #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.17: Theo Momodu, 18 (23.12.2002) of Overbury Street, Hackney had previously pleaded guilty to murder: All three men were also found guilty after trial of Section 18 GBH (wounding with intent) in relation to an attack on another man:

Three men who went on stabbing spree in Hackney convicted of murder: ‘Taylar Isaac, 20 (28.07.2000) of Amhurst Road, Hackney and David Kerrigan, 20 (29.10.2000) of Brackenfield Close, Hackney were found guilty of murdering 29-year-old Joshua after a trial at the Old Bailey that concluded on Friday, 16 April’

[VICTIM: Joshua White was fatally stabbed in Hackney in 2019]

[VICTIM: Joshua White was fatally stabbed in Hackney in 2019]

Harley McGivern, 20 (05.02.2001) of the Beecholme Estate, Hackney was found guilty of perverting the course of justice.

Sentencing will take place at the same court on a date to be determined.

The court heard how a text message sent to Momodu from a person believed to be in prison urged him and other members of his gang to ‘ride out’ and attack people as a demonstration of loyalty.

On the afternoon of Friday, 26 April, Momodu, Isaac and Kerrigan carried out that instruction with devastating consequences.

They were driven by an unidentified man in a stolen white SUV to Brenthouse Road, E9 where, armed with knives and swords and wearing balaclavas, they confronted the occupants of a grey Mercedes.

The Mercedes made off and was pursued by the gang.

Seconds later, CCTV captured the three men chasing Joshua White on foot, still brandishing their weapons.

Joshua ran towards a shop in Frampton Park Road, colliding with a six-year-old girl on roller skates who was innocently waiting outside. The girl and Joshua went crashing to the floor.

He briefly paused to check she was ok before getting to his feet. But as he reached the door of the shop he was caught by Momodu and Isaac and stabbed multiple times. Kerrigan was also seen on CCTV, stood yards away.

Joshua collapsed inside the shop and despite the efforts of the emergency services who rushed to the scene, he died in hospital later that day.

Not satisfied with stabbing just one person, Momodu, Isaac and Kerrigan returned to their white SUV and made off.

In nearby Wilton Way, they found a man they recognised from a local estate. He was with his partner and young child but the gang set upon him anyway, stabbing him multiple times as he attempted to flee. Fortunately, he survived his injuries.

As the attackers drove away from the scene, the registration of their white SUV was being circulated to nearby police units. Armed officers in an unmarked vehicle spotted them and gave chase.

The driver of the SUV crashed after a short pursuit and the occupants ran in different directions, shedding layers of clothing in an effort to disguise their identity.

Momodu was arrested nearby. The other men were identified and arrested some time later.

Detailed analysis of CCTV in the hours before and after the attacks established that McGivern had allowed his flat to be used as a base for the gang and that he had personally helped to dispose of clothing and other evidence. He was arrested and charged for his role.

Detective Sergeant Andy Sheppard, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “These three men went out that day with the clear intention to stab people. They didn’t care who, as long as it earned them respect and notoriety in their gang: “ Joshua appears to have been targeted at random. He was chased in broad daylight and savagely stabbed just yards from an innocent six-year-old girl: “ Unbelievably, they went on to target a second victim, also in front of a child, and again for no apparent reason: “ There is no place for this sort of mindless brutality on the streets of London. Young men caught up in this way of life may think they are proving themselves and building a reputation, but in reality they are just cutting short their own lives and the lives of others: “ The community is safer knowing that they will be behind bars for a long time: “ Joshua’s parents both released statements following the verdict:

His mother, Trisha Sargusingh, said: “My son Josh was a kind, loving, happy and caring son. A loyal friend and a sensitive and humble man: “ His passing has left a hole in my heart that will never be filled. From the time of his senseless murder we, as a family, have been mourning not only for him but for the loss of all the experiences, hopes and dreams that he will never now fulfil: “ Coming to court has been so difficult, physically, emotionally and spiritually and although there is no punishment severe enough that can alleviate the horrific manner of Joshua’s death we are hopeful that a strong sentence for those convicted may be a deterrent so that other families may never know a pain like ours.”

Joshua’s father, Leigh White, said: “Upon receiving the verdict today, I would like to say thank you to everyone involved who has contributed to achieving this outcome. The past two years have been extremely difficult not only for myself, but for all of the family and close friends whom Joshua left behind: “ The conviction of those who took his life will not bring Joshua back or ease our pain, but we hope that it will bring us a measure of comfort from which we can start to heal: “ I hope that today’s verdict will have lasting consequences for those who committed such a heartless and shameful killing and stands as a lesson to others who are considering carrying knives which could result in the loss of other innocent lives: “ Joshua’s life was cut short in such a meaningless and senseless killing. I hope that those responsible recognise the deep psychological and emotional damage that this has inflicted on everyone who knew him: “ Joshua was a caring, loving, beautiful, kind-hearted person, and his death has left such a huge void in all our lives. Life without him will never be the same again. Whilst our pain will never heal, we hope that in time it will become easier for us to bear.”

(NEW YORK CITY) JUST IN: A man previously convicted of stabbing his mother to death in the Bronx in 2002 has been arrested and charged with assaulting a 65-year-old Asian woman in a hate crime, an attack captured on a video that went viral amid a rise in anti-Asian incidents in the U.S #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.01: They said Mr Elliot, who was living at a hotel that serves as a homeless shelter a few blocks from the scene of the attack, was released from prison in 2019 and on lifetime parole.

New York City police arrest suspect in brutal bashing of Asian-American woman: Police said Brandon Elliot, 38, was the man seen on video kicking and stomping on the woman on Monday.

Posted Yesterday at 12:50pm, updated 12h ago

Play Video. Duration: 35 seconds
CCTV footage shows a man kicking a 65-year-old woman several times in a New York City street.

He was convicted of stabbing his mother to death in the Bronx in 2002, when he was 19.

He faces charges of assault as a hate crime, attempted assault as a hate crime, assault and attempted assault in the attack, police said.

It wasn’t immediately known whether he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.

Mr Elliot was due to be arraigned on Wednesday (local time) on two charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime and one count of first-degree attempted assault as a hate crime, Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said at a news briefing.

“Mr Elliot is accused of brutally shoving, kicking and stomping a 65-year-old mother to the ground after telling her that she didn’t belong here,” Mr Vance said.

“There is no place for these atrocious acts of anti-Asian violence in New York.”

Mr Vance added that his office has more than a dozen open cases and ongoing investigations into apparent hate incidents against members of the Asian American Pacific Islander community since the start of this year.

The New York Police Department said its Hate Crimes Task Force had been looking for the assailant since Monday afternoon (local time) and found Mr Elliot through an investigation that included social media and community tips.

Mr Elliot, who was on lifetime parole after serving a prison term for murdering his mother, was arrested without incident at his residence in New York City on Tuesday, police said.

Victim discharged from hospital after ‘unnecessary assault’

The victim was identified as Vilma Kari, a 65-year-old woman who immigrated from the Philippines, her daughter told The New York Times; the newspaper did not identify Ms Kari’s daughter.

She was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after being treated for serious injuries, a hospital spokesperson said.

“We want to extend our sincere well wishes and speedy recovery to the elderly lady for this unnecessary assault,” Wellington Chen, executive director of New York City’s Chinatown Partnership, said.

“Hope this arrest gives her and her family a bit of relief.”

Police on Tuesday had blanketed the midtown Manhattan neighbourhood with wanted posters and offered a $US2,500 ($3,282) reward for information leading to the whereabouts of the man seen on surveillance video brutalising the woman. Loading

The attack on Monday was among the latest in a national spike in anti-Asian hate crimes, and happened just weeks after a mass shooting in Atlanta that left eight people dead, six of them women of Asian descent.

The surge in violence has been linked in part to misplaced blame for the coronavirus and former president Donald Trump’s use of racially charged terms like “Chinese virus”.

US President Joe Biden has deplored the surge in anti-Asian violence, saying last week that “hate can have no safe harbour in America”.

Witnesses called out for failing to act

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called Monday’s attack “absolutely disgusting and outrageous”.

He said it was “absolutely unacceptable” that witnesses did not intervene.

“I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what you do, you’ve got to help your fellow New Yorker,” Mr de Blasio said, evoking the post-9/11 mantra of “see something, say something”.

The attack happened late on Monday morning outside an apartment building two blocks from Times Square, a bustling, heavily policed section of midtown Manhattan known as the “Crossroads of the World”.

WARNING: VIDEO SHOWS GRAPHIC CONTENT:

Two workers inside the building who appeared to be security guards were seen on surveillance video witnessing the attack but failing to come to the woman’s aid.

One of them was seen closing the building door as the woman was on the ground.

The attacker was able to casually walk away while onlookers watched, the video showed.

The building’s management company said they were suspended pending an investigation. The workers’ union said they called for help immediately.

“If you see someone being attacked, do whatever you can,” Mr de Blasio said.

“Make noise. Call out what’s happening. Go and try and help. Immediately call for help. Call 911.

“This is something where we all have to be part of the solution. We can’t just stand back and watch a heinous act happening.”

This year in New York City there have been 33 hate crimes with an Asian victim as of Sunday, police said. There were 11 such attacks by the same time last year.

(WOLVERHAMPTON) Court Report: A killer who carried out a sustained attack on a father-of-two following a chance meeting has on the 19 March been jailed for life #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.22: Mr Busma was discovered dead with a stab wound to the chest, burn marks and injuries consistent with being stamped on at Wilkin’s flat:

Man jailed over brutal Wolverhampton murder: ‘Simon Wilkins tortured 39-year-old Arturas Busma and left him with multiple injuries before handing himself into police’

19th March 2021:

WM POLICE CASE NOTES: He had been lured to the address in Tettenhall Road on 20 April last year after they had met outside a nearby convenience store and had purchased alcohol. There is nothing to suggest they had ever met before and Mr Busma had been in the wrong place at the wrong time: The next day Wilkins attended Wolverhampton police station and stated he had punched a man who now wasn’t breathing. The 28-year-old claimed Mr Busma had pulled a knife on him and he retaliated: The only evidence we found after descending on the address was Mr Busma’s badly beaten body after what we believe was a sustained attack: Wilkins pleaded guilty to the murder but his version of Mr Busma being the aggressor was not accepted by the court and he was jailed for a minimum of 17 and a half years at Wolverhampton Crown Court: The case against a 33-year-old woman who was also initially charged with murder was dropped:

Detective Inspector Laura Harrison, from our homicide unit, said: “Sadly the family of Mr Busma will never really know why their loved one was taken away in such a brutal way: “ It appeared he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and happened to come across Wilkins. He was persuaded to go the flat and it was there he was killed: “ We can only hope the lengthy prison sentence will offer some comfort to Mr Busma’s family and friends.”
