An assault of the kind is rare, as the border is heavily defended by a series of raised earth barriers and fences.
In the past, it was usually targeted from a distance.

“A suicide bomber on foot detonated his explosives among people who were attending a funeral ceremony in Burka district this morning,” according to Aminullah Amarkhil, police chief of Baghlan province.
The funeral was for a tribal elder in Baghlan, a province on the main road from Kabul to Mazar-e-Sharif.
A number of high-ranking police officials and provincial council members – who were probably the target – were unharmed.
#AceBreakingNews – KABUL (Reuters) – June 06 – Abdullah Abdullah, front-runner in Afghanistan’s presidential election, escaped assassination on Friday when two bombs blew up outside a hotel where he had just staged a rally, killing six people.
The midday blasts, one caused by a suicide bomber, destroyed a car in Abdullah’s convoy, police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai said. One of the dead was a bodyguard.
Twenty-two people were injured.
Television images showed the charred remains of the car alongside shattered shop fronts in a densely populated western district of Kabul.

A Saudi militant who came to Syria to fight with the country’s Al-Qaeda affiliate, the Nusra Front, blew himself up late Monday at an army checkpoint in the village of Rahjan in central Hama province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Tuesday. Rahjan, in a remote eastern part of Hama, is the ancestral home of Defense Minister Fahd al-Freij.
