Tremors were felt in Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. The epicenter of the quake was in the Coral Sea at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The first reports began coming in at 9:41 am local time. Police said that no damage has been reported, and no tsunami threat has been issued.
The quake has been described as historic since earthquakes are very rare in this part of Australia: the previous tremor of a similar magnitude struck the area in the 1930s.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties after the undersea quake struck at 06:43 GMT some 62km northeast of Surigao City on Mindanao Island.
The quake occurred at a depth of 26km and was felt on Mindanao’s northeast tip as well as on nearby Leyte Island, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

However, waves could be generated along coasts in the area from an earthquake of that magnitude.
The quake was centred in the sea about 75km south-west of the main town of Arawa on Bougainville, at a depth of about 50km.

In his words, four men and one woman died in the quake. They died of heart attack under collapsed parts of buildings. The interior minister also noted that authorities had partially lifted a tsunami warning in the southern part of the Pacific coast according to Tass.
The earthquake nested at a depth of ten kilometres, the US Geological Survey said earlier. The epicentre was located 86 kilometres north-west off the Chilean port city of Iquique.
Thousands of local residents were evacuated over a tsunami threat that will remain in place for several more hours.
The earthquake damaged several buildings and roads and disrupted power supply. Looting cases were reported in several settlements.
Meanwhile, 300 prisoners escaped from a women’s prison in the city of Iquique.

The earthquake occurred 37 kilometres north-east of West Yellowstone, Montana at 6:34 am local time (1234 GMT) Sunday.
The quake was centred almost in the middle of Yellowstone National Park, near the Norris Geyser Basin, said Peter Cervelli, a spokesman for the USGS Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, NBC News reported.
He added that any damage from the tremor would likely be minor, noting there are not many visitors in the park at the moment.
There were no immediate reports of damage.
According to USGS there were four aftershocks recorded with a magnitude from 3.1 to 3.3.
The USGS said that more are expected.

A 6.3 earthquake is capable of causing ‘serious damage’, according to the USGS, while earthquakes measuring between 6.0 and 6.9 on the Richter scale can be felt up to hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter.
The quake struck 36 km south-south-west of the city of Hikari, western Honshu, which has a population of over 50,000 people.

#AceWorldNews Ohio authorities have halted a fracking operation in following two quakes. Both the authorities and the operator say there is no evidence linking Hydraulic fracturing with the tremors, but in the past an Ohio well was closed for causing quakes.
The Ohio tremors were felt on Monday in Poland Township and the village of Lowellville near the Pennsylvania. The first 3.0 magnitude quake stroke at about 2:30am and was followed by a second 2.6 magnitude quake at 11:45am, the US Geological Survey reported.
Two smaller aftershocks were reported later in the day.
Following the quakes Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) ordered suspension of drilling operation at Carbon Limestone Landfill in Lowellville, local media reported. Texas-based Hilcorp Energy has about a dozen wells in the area and was performing horizontal drilling as part of fracking production of hydrocarbons.
“Out of an abundance of caution we notified the only oil and gas operator in the area, and ordered them to halt all operations until further assessment can take place,” Mark Bruce, ODNR public information officer, said in a statement. “ODNR is using all available resources to determine the exact circumstances surrounding this event and will take the appropriate actions necessary to protect public health and safety.”
