` China Indicted Eight People on Terrorism Charges over Attack on Tiananmen Gate ‘

#AceNewsServices – BEIJING – May 31 – (AP) – China has indicted eight people on terrorism charges in connection with an attack on Beijing’s iconic Tiananmen Gate last year that killed two tourists and three assailants, the government said Saturday.

The eight were arrested within days of the Oct 28 attack, in which a man drove an SUV through a crowd of tourists before stopping in front of the gate and setting the vehicle on fire.

A Chinese visitor and a tourist from the Philippines were killed, along with the vehicle’s driver, his wife and mother-in-law, according to Chinese authorities.

The attack was the first to strike Beijing in recent memory. It pointed to a new level of violence and lethal intent in the long simmering insurgency against Chinese rule in the far north-western region of Xinjiang waged by radicals among the native Turkic Uighur Muslim population.

A notice about the indictments posted on the regional prosecutor’s website said the eight would stand trial at the intermediate court in Xinjiang’s capital, Urumqi.

They were accused of organising, leading and participating in a terrorist organisation, as well as endangering public security.

The charges are punishable by a maximum penalty of death.

` Fifty Five People In China’s North-Western Province Found Guilty of Terrorism and Murder ‘

#AceNewsServices – CHINA (Xinjiang) – May 28 – Fifty-five people in China’s north-western Xinjiang province have been found guilty of terrorism, separatism and murder, state media report.

(Photos from the open-air trial showed police trucks parked near a running track)

The defendants, who appeared to be from the region’s Muslim Uighur community, were presented to a stadium holding about 7,000 spectators.

Three of the prisoners were sentenced to death.

Chinese officials have blamed militant Uighur groups for a growing number of violent attacks across the country.

Prisoners wearing orange vests stood in the back of the vehicles, surrounded by armed guards, their heads bowed.

The sentencing happened in Yili, near China’s border with Kazakhstan.

Local officials and residents watched the proceedings.

Those sentenced to death had used weapons to murder a family last year “using extremely cruel methods”, according to reports.

This kind of mass trial is reminiscent of China’s Cultural Revolution in the 1960s and 1970s, when large groups of people would gather to denounce those who crossed the Communist Party leadership. In the 1980s and 1990s, public trials were also used during the government’s widespread attempts to crack down on crime.

Startled by an increasing number of bloody attacks on civilians linked to militants within Xinjiang’s ethnic Uighur community, the Chinese government is returning to this type of political theatre.

Beijing is attempting to calm the wider Chinese public, by showing a blatant display of force, while also issuing a warning to Uighurs hoping to challenge the dominance of the minority Han Chinese moving into Xinjiang.

No further details about the defendants’ cases were immediately available.

The public rally seems to have been a show of force by the Chinese government, which has just launched a national anti-terrorism operation focusing on Xinjiang.

Officials last week announced a one-year campaign against militant violence in Xinjiang, banning people from conducting or supporting extremist activity.

` Three People Killed and Seventy Injured in an Explosion at a Station in Chinas Xinjiang ‘

#AceWorldNews – BEIJING – April 30 – Three people have been killed and a further 70 injured in an explosion in China’s Xinjiang, in the country’s far west, on Wednesday.

The blast struck a station. Immediate reports from the country only stated that there had been injuries but no deaths.

Xinjiang government spokesman, Luo Fuyong, told Reuters by phone that he was “deeply concerned” about what had happened, but would not offer any comment on suspected causes.

However, state television later mentioned that “attackers” had also used knives as well as detonating the device.

President Xi Jinping recently mentioned plans to fight terrorists shortly after a local visit.

The resource-rich region has been ravaged by violence the government says is caused by Islamist extremists and separatists.

` Britain must Immediately Refrain from Using Human Rights as a pretext for interfering in China's Internal Politics '

#AceWorldNews – BRITAIN – April 15 – (Reuters) – China on Tuesday condemned Britain for interfering in its domestic affairs, in response to a human rights report, a day after the British government said Beijing had called off human rights talks.

Britain listed China as “a country of concern” in its annual human rights report last week, saying it had observed increased curbs on freedom of expression, association and assembly in 2013.

It also cited reports of “the forcible suppression of ethnic unrest in Tibet and Xinjiang.”

China reacted by calling off talks with Britain on Beijing’s human rights record. Chinese and British officials had been due to hold a round of the two-way Human Rights Dialogue in London on Wednesday.

The two countries had agreed to resume the regular meetings during a trip to China by British Prime Minister David Cameron in December.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying accused Britain of issuing the report with “irresponsible remarks made about the Chinese political system, rudely slandering and criticising China’s human rights situation”.

Britain must immediately stop using human rights as a pretext for interfering in China’s internal politics and judicial sovereignty, Hua told a daily news briefing.

` Police in China’s North Western `Xinjiang Region ‘ Shot and Kill `Uyghur ‘ Sudent Motorcyclist ‘

#AceWorldNews – XINJIANG – UYGHUR – April 14 – (RFA) – Police in China’s north-western Xinjiang region shot and killed an ethnic minority Uyghur student motorcyclist and wounded two of his pillion riders after they allegedly beat a traffic light on the weekend, sparking mammoth protests over the violent action, according to residents.

Family members and relatives of Ablimit as well as residents of his township prepare to take his body wrapped in white cloth in a protest march to the Kelpin county centre, April 13, 2014.

High School student Abdulbasit Ablimit, 17, died on the spot after he was shot from behind by policemen on patrol late Saturday in Kelpin county in Aksu prefecture while the two other Uyghurs who suffered gunshot wounds have been detained, the residents said.

“I’m not sure whether he did not see the red light signal or he intentionally beat the red light,” a Kelpin county employee told RFA’s Uyghur Service, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The police shot him from the back and killed him.”

“In our county, traffic police always stop motorcyclists and check their licence and ID card,” said another resident, also speaking anonymously. “Possibly, the young guy did not have any documents with him and fearing he would be fined, sped away and was shot by the police.”
