(NEW YORK) Worldwide Rally For Freedom Day Report: Protestors over ‘ vaccine mandate’ rallied on Saturday waving banners & posters and shouting #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Sept.19: Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in New York City’s Times Square Saturday to protest coronavirus vaccine mandate requirements: Protesters could be seen waving flags and signs on Saturday with many of them chanting against mandatory vaccines.

#AceDailyNews says that according to Fox News …Times Square swarmed by hundreds protesting #COVID19 vaccine mandate, chanting ‘F— Joe Biden under the event that was part of the ‘World Wide Rally For Freedom’

At one point a woman got on a stage and told Biden that she has lost her patience with him prompting chants of “F— Joe Biden” from the crowd.

The event was part of the “World Wide Rally For Freedom” which took place in cities across the globe including in Australia where protesters clashed with police in videos posted to social media.

“We will push back against widespread propaganda, by producing our own media, and advancing our own narrative, instead of succumbing to the one being pushed on us. We will not accept the rampant politicization of science and medicine, and we will return these institutions to being neutral sources of information for the benefit of society, over government and corporate interests,” a press release about Saturday’s event reed on the organizers’ website.

Earlier this summer, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted a policy mandating that New Yorkers who wished to visit bars, restaurants, gyms, and other local businesses have to show proof of being vaccinated against the coronavirus.

It is unknown if any arrests were made or if any road closures resulted from the Times Square protest.

The New York Police Department declined to comment on the protest when contacted by Fox News.

(SCOTLAND) SNP/GREENS Deal Report: The power-sharing deal between the SNP and Scottish Greens is a “leap of faith” for both parties, Nicola Sturgeon has told MSPs #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Sept.01: However the SNP-Green majority in parliament was able to vote through the appointment of Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater as junior ministers in the Scottish government.

#AceDailyNews says that First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was speaking as Holyrood and approved the appointment of Green politicians to ministerial office for the first time anywhere in the UK.on Monday ….She said the pact could represent “a new and better way of doing politics” Holyrood’s other parties hit out at the deal, saying it was more about pursuing independence than the environment:

Live: Look back on Nicola Sturgeon’s statement to MSPs

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the Greens will no longer have a leaders question at First Minister’s Questions or an automatic speaking slot at the start and end of Holyrood debates.

The co-operation agreement between the SNP and Scottish Greens was hammered out during the parliament’s summer recess.

It technically falls short of a full coalition arrangement, with a range of areas set aside where the parties will be allowed to disagree over the coming years.

PA Media: Scottish Greens co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater are joining Nicola Sturgeon’s government: So who are the new Scottish Green ministers?

However, it does see Green MSPs enter government, with co-leaders Mr Harvie and Ms Slater taking up posts focused on zero-carbon homes and green jobs.

Ms Sturgeon told MSPs that the deal was “a milestone in this parliament’s progress”, and a “commitment to a new and better way of doing politics”.

She said it was “the product of much negotiation and some compromise, and also a leap of faith for both parties” – but “one we are taking willingly and for the common good”.

The first minister said the deal would “provide the strong platform needed to deliver the transformative policies that will build a greener, fairer country and make people’s lives better”.

And she said delivering an independence referendum inside the current parliamentary term would be a “key strand” of the pact, saying there was an “undeniable” mandate for this.

Nicola Sturgeon said the deal was a “leap of faith” for the SNP and Greens, but one taken “for the common good”

One consequence of the deal has been that the Greens will have fewer opportunities to ask questions and table debates at Holyrood.

They will no longer have a regular place in the weekly session of First Minister’s Questions or the right to respond to ministerial statements, and will have their allocation of “short money” funds cut.

However the remaining five Green MSPs on the back benches will still be able to table questions – with Mark Ruskell demonstrating this after Ms Sturgeon’s statement by intervening to praise the deal.

Opposition parties were critical of the power-sharing arrangement, with Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross calling it a “nationalist coalition with one overriding goal – separating Scotland from the UK”.

He said the SNP had needed to do the deal as they “failed to get a majority” in May’s election, and said it would “hammer everyone who works hard, everyone who runs a business and everyone who owns a vehicle”.

Scottish Labour’s Anas Sarwar said the move was “more about the constitution than the climate”.

He said the pact was “not about delivering accountability and transparency”, but about “greater control for Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP”.

And Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton said the agreement was “thin gruel for the Green Party”, claiming the “SNP have barely had to budge” on key policies such as education.

(DHAKA) JUST IN: At least 22 people have died in a collision between a passenger boat and at least one cargo vessel in Bangladesh #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.30: The passenger boat sank carrying more than 100 people, with the driver of a cargo vessel suspected of colliding with the boat arrested…….

#AcDailyNews says that a Bangladeshi passenger boat sinks after it collides with cargo vessel, killing at least 22 and about 50 passengers were missing after the incident on Friday evening in a large open body of water in the eastern district of Brahmanbaria, according to initial reports from officials and Bangladeshi media…

People watch rescue work after a passenger boat carrying more than 100 people sank
About 50 people are still missing, according to local authorities.(AP)

Posted 21h ago, updated 17h ago

However, no passengers were believed missing after nearly 24 hours of search efforts, said Emon Sarker, a duty officer with the district’s fire service and civil defence, who also provided the final death toll.

“Maybe many swam to safety. There was no passenger list. It happens here. Today, nobody came to us looking for any missing people,” Mr Sarker said by phone.

Bangladesh is a delta nation where water transport is heavily used to move people and goods.

But deadly accidents are common because of unskilled operation and poor enforcement of safety rules.

The country is crisscrossed by 230 rivers, and during the monsoon season some low-lying areas fill with water and are also used by boats.

The cargo boat’s driver and two assistants were caught by locals in the Bijoynagar area and turned over to the authorities, said Anisur Rahman, the district police superintendent.

Mr Sarker said the sunken boat was still submerged and would be brought to shore on Sunday.

Survivors said about 100 people were aboard. Local news reports, quoting the area’s top government administrator, Hayat-Ud-Dola, said about 50 people were missing.

A witness said two cargo vessels hit the boat, which sank quickly, Dhaka-based The Daily Star newspaper reported.

“I was grazing cattle on the bank. I heard a loud noise and saw the cargo vessels hitting the passenger trawler. I saw the trawler sinking quickly,” witness Nurul Amin told the paper.

The Bijoynagar area is 82 kilometres east of the capital, Dhaka.

(NEW ENGLAND) #Henri Report: Predictions that it will come dangerously close to New England as a hurricane Accu Weather forecasters are saying #AceWeatherDesk report

#AceWeatherReport – Aug.22: With a track expected to bring the potential hurricane along the coast of the Northeast, Henri will incite dangerous beach risks throughout the weekend….

#AceWeatherDesk says AccuWeather forecasters were growing more concerned Thursday that Henri, which was on the cusp of hurricane status and is expected to intensify in the coming days, will move close enough to stir more than just seas along the East Coast this weekend.

Updated Aug. 20, 2021 7:38 AM BST:

As of 11 p.m. on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Henri (pronounced: ahn-REE) was a strong tropical storm with sustained winds of 65 mph — just 10 mph shy of hurricane force. The center of the storm was located 415 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and 800 miles south of Nantucket, Massachusetts. It was moving west-northwestward at 8 mph.

Through the end of the week, Henri will continue to push away from Bermuda and draw nearer to the Carolina coastline and over the bath-warm waters of the Gulf Stream. In doing so, the system will have the opportunity to gain wind intensity and become a hurricane.

“A cold front approaching the eastern U.S. will be able to steer Henri, allowing its forward movement to turn more northerly later this week,” said AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski.

This timing should keep Henri from making landfall along the Southeast Atlantic coast. Even still, beaches from Savannah, Georgia, to Jones Beach, New York, can expect some indirect impacts from the storm.

Beachgoers trying to soak up the last bit of summer warmth with a trip to the beaches should use caution when entering the water. The final weekends of August are big with vacationers who visit places like North Carolina’s Outer Banks, the Jersey Shore, Montauk, New York, and Nantucket and Cape Cod in New England.

Water temperatures were close to the peak for the year and were inviting in all of those places. As of Thursday, the ocean temperatures off the Outer Banks were 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit. The water temperature at beaches in Atlantic City was 79.0 F, 74.3 F in the waters off Montauk and 75.6 F near Nantucket. However, AccuWeather forecasters warn that dangers such as rough surf and strong rip currents will be a concern through Saturday in this zone.

A 50-year-old father and his 28-year-old son were killed in a rip current near the Oak Island Pear in North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon, according to WECT. Bystanders pulled the father from the water, but emergency responders were unable to save him. A two-hour search ensued for his son, who was still missing, and his body was later recovered.

According to data from NOAA, more people have died as a result of rip currents on a yearly basis over the last decade than from lightning strikes or due to impacts from extreme cold combined.

Into the weekend, AccuWeather meteorologists will monitor several factors to determine Henri’s exact path, which will determine impacts beyond dangerous surf conditions.

At this time, AccuWeather meteorologists believe Henri will not make a northward turn until later on Friday. Should the northward turn wait until Friday night, Henri will be able to close in on the East Coast and possibly make a landfall in New England. In fact, forecasters are growing increasingly confident that a landfall will occur in southeastern New England later this weekend.

Whether Henri makes landfall in the United States or not, the combination of the front and Henri may displace some moisture to the north and west of Henri’s center later on Saturday. As that happens, heavy rain may pour down over portions of northern New Jersey, northeastern Pennsylvania, southern New York and Connecticut.

The heaviest rain is likely to stay closer to Henri’s exact track and will arrive on Sunday across parts of southeastern New England. Across the Massachusetts Cape and islands, 2-4 inches of rain is forecast, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 8 inches possible.

The rain could prove to be more than just a nuisance for vacationers, and that amount could result in flooding problems.

Residents in the Northeast and New England who will face another round of rain by the end of the weekend may still be cleaning up after tropical downpours unleashed by Tropical Rainstorm Fred. Since Fred unloaded several inches of rain, Henri’s second dose of heavy, tropical rainfall may trigger flash flooding in the region more easily.

This area will also be the most susceptible to damaging wind gusts from Henri. Widespread wind gusts of 40-60 mph may just swipe southeastern New England and blast areas stretching from eastern Long Island to the Massachusetts cape. The strongest wind gusts are most likely, however, to be over the water as long as Henri does not make landfall.

Winds of this magnitude will be capable of causing minor damage, as well as funneling water into bays and inlets and raising the water level along the coast.

Henri’s arrival to New England will coincide with a full moon on Sunday. This combination could bring higher tides and more widespread coastal flooding than during a different lunar phase.

There have been 32 tropical systems that have passed within 100 nautical miles of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, since 1950, according to AccuWeather Senior Weather Editor and meteorologist Jesse Ferrell. The most recent was Elsa earlier this year, just before it lost its tropical storm status.

Thirteen hurricanes have tracked within 100 nautical miles of Nantucket, Massachusetts, since 1950. (NOAA)

The most recent hurricane to pass closely offshore was Arthur in 2014, which caused power outages, flooding and winds up to 63 mph at Nantucket. In that same timeframe since 1950, 13 of the storms were hurricane strength as they moved near the area, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data.

The most memorable storm to impact Massachusetts in recent history was Hurricane Bob in 1991. Bob made landfalls in Rhode Island and Maine and caused $1 billion in damage in Massachusetts. Winds greater than 100 mph and severe coastal flooding blasted Massachusetts during Bob’s rampage.

Further back in history, other famous hurricanes to affect New England include “The Great New England Hurricane” in 1938, which crashed ashore as a Category 3 storm on Long Island, and Hurricane Edna in 1954, which moved directly over Martha’s Vineyard. In 1954, Hurricane Carol set the scene for an iconic photo of Edgewood Yacht Club in Rhode Island surrounded by extreme storm surge.

The Edgewood Yacht Club was surrounded by water amid Hurricane Carol’s storm surge in 1954. (NOAA)

Next week, Henri is forecast to shift northeastward and narrowly miss the southern tip of Nova Scotia. The south- and east-facing coasts of the province will be most susceptible not only to gusty winds but also to coastal flooding as Henri passes just to the south.

Heavy, tropical rainfall will expand farther inland across Nova Scotia, bringing with it the threat of flooding.

People that are planning a weekend trip to a destination to this portion of Atlantic Canada should continue to check the AccuWeather forecast so that they can plan accordingly.

Driver towing caravan in rain
ALAMY: Caravan drivers could face difficult driving conditions as storms hit southern England and Wales

Campsites may face high winds while cars towing caravans could face tricky driving conditions.

The thunderstorms come after days of high temperatures, which prompted Met Office warnings for extreme heat.

As the heatwave broke on Friday, there were warnings of strong, gusty winds particularly in exposed coastal areas and hilly places.

Thunderstorms were forecast to move into southern England overnight, reaching south Wales and the Midlands early on Saturday.

Frequent lightning and the possibility of large hailstones falling as well as torrential rainfall were likely, the Met Office said.

Firefighters were called to a house in Andover, in Hampshire, on Friday night after it was struck by lightning and its roof was partially destroyed.

Forecasters warned of a chance of flooding and power cuts – with up to 35mm of rain predicted to fall within in an hour in southern counties of England, and further slow-moving thunderstorms forecast to develop on Saturday afternoon.

Getty ImagesLatitude Festival-goers in Suffolk could be at risk from thunderstorms and heavy rain on Sunday

Further heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected on Sunday across southern and eastern England, with the yellow warning stretching into East Anglia, possibly affecting Latitude Festival in Suffolk.

Up to 80 or 100mm of rainfall could build up in some locations over the course of the day, the Met Office says.

Lightning destroys roofs as storms end heatwave in southern England and Wales

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue ServiceTwo houses in Andover were hit by lightning on Saturday morning

Lightning has damaged homes in Hampshire and severe weather warnings are in place as the heatwave gives way to thunderstorms and torrential rain.

A 70-year-old woman escaped unharmed after two houses in Andover were partially destroyed in the early hours.

The Met Office issued a yellow alert for storms, and warned of flooding, hail and 55mph gusts of wind in southern England and Wales.

It comes after days of extreme heat – and as many set off on summer holidays.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tweeted a picture of two semi-detached houses struck by lightning in Andover’s Mercia Avenue. The woman was assessed by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.

A spokesman said the roof was severely damaged.

Neighbour Barrie Austen said the roof was “completely ablaze”. “The side that supports the roof, that collapsed as well and then the flames spread into next door,” he told the PA news agency.

BBC Weather said that “after a very stormy start in the south” the thunderstorms had eased, but were expected to develop again later – reaching up to the Midlands after NI temperature record for third time in a week

Up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall within an hour in some southern counties of England later, with flooding possible.

BBC Weather tweeted a picture of lightning on the West Sussex coast taken in the early hours

Meanwhile the heatwave looks set to continue in Northern Ireland and western Scotland, with temperatures of 28C possible.

And despite the wet start in the south of England, it should remain dry and sunny in the north west of the country.

It comes as many people are expected to set off for their summer break this weekend, as the school holidays begin across large swathes of the UK.

Cooler weather is predicted across the UK from Sunday, with further heavy showers and thunderstorms expected across southern and eastern England.

(TOKYO) JUST IN: Twenty people are missing in central Japan after a huge landslide hit Atami city following heavy rainfall #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Kyodo news agency reports that the bodies of what appear to be two victims have been found in the port district.

#AceDailyNews says a landslide has hit Japan leaving at least 20-people-missing in Atami city and according to Reuters a number of houses were swept away or buried

Reuters: Houses Buried:

Video on social media above shows a torrent of black mud plummeting down from a mountain top and on through the city towards the sea. Several houses were destroyed or buried.

A witness described a “horrible sound” before he fled to higher ground.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has put together a task force to respond to the disaster and the wider emergency caused by heavy rainfall on the Pacific coastline.

Atami, a hot-spring resort in the prefecture of Shizuoka, has had more rainfall in the first three days of July than it usually sees in the whole month. The weather has been similar in neighbouring Kanagawa prefecture.

A witness told national broadcaster NHK: “I heard a horrible sound and saw a mudslide flowing downwards as rescue workers were urging people to evacuate. So I ran to higher ground.”

The mudslide struck at 10:30 local time (01:30 GMT), according to a local resident.

Police, firefighters and members of Japan’s military are involved in a search operation.

Reuters: Residents in parts of three prefectures – Shizuoka, Kanagawa and Chiba – have been ordered to evacuate following warnings of further flooding in low-lying areas.

Japan is prone to mudslides and flooding during its rainy season. Dozens were killed in flooding in July last year, and more than 200 died in 2018 when parts of western Japan were inundated.

(BEIJING,China.) President XI’s – CCP 100th Anniversary Statement Report: The main emphasis of his speech was ‘anyone bullying’ their country ‘will not be tolerated’ and they will get their heads bashed #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.02: China’s President Xi Jinping has warned that foreign powers will “get their heads bashed” if they attempt to bully or influence the country.

#AceDailyNews says President Xi Jinping tells Chinese Communist Party 100th anniversary ‘foreign power’ won’t be allowed to ‘bully’ China and they will take back Taiwan check out his speech in full below:

Much of the language in Xi’s speech today was familiar, but a few things worth noting:

  1. 1.Xi had an announcement: “China has accomplished building a moderately prosperous society in all respects”
Like his anti-poverty goal, this was always going to be announced as accomplished no matter the reality on the ground, but he clearly feels the country is at a level of wealth now where declaring this to a domestic audience seems reasonable. Stating it now allows Xi and the Party to declare China has done away with its poor past, and from now on it’s wealthier and more confident.

  2. 2.The language directed at the West: “We will never allow any foreign force to bully, enslave or subjugate us. Anyone who does will find themselves in a collision course with a great wall of steel forged by 1.4 billion people.”
This comment received the biggest cheer of the entire event. Nationalism is in overdrive in China, and Xi is milking it ruthlessly to shore up his own popularity. He also delivered a warning to countries like Australia that raise concerns about human rights in China: ‘We will not accept sanctimonious preaching from those who feel they have the right to lecture us’. This stuff plays well at home but it also is a sign that speaking hard truths about China will be met with even more diplomatic blowback in future.

  3. 3.One final quote: “The patriotic United Front is an important means for the Party to unite all the sons & daughters of the Chinese nation, those at home and abroad for the great rejuvenation”.
This sort of comment is boilerplate, but it’s worth noting that the Party’s United Front organisation is at the heart of so much of the problems between Australia and China. It directs groups and organisations to push China’s interests abroad, often covertly, and judging from Xi’s language, the Chinese government sees no problem with that. The ‘sons and daughters’ wording also blurs the line between Chinese citizenship and ethnicity – creating a desire to instil patriotism and even loyalty among people of Chinese descent even if they’re citizens of other countries. It doesn’t bode well for any improvement in relations with the West, nor for the pressure some Chinese-Australians feel to have to declare loyalty to Australia.

Does President Xi have a successor?

Does President Xi Jinping have a successor?
What is the gov structure there because I have only ever heard his name (in recent times), there have to be other people working with him, anyone notable? Maybe names/ positions of those who flanked him as he arrived today?

-Sam

Here’s Bill Birtles:

“Xi does not have an obvious successor — that’s part of why Xi looms larger than any of his immediate predecessors. He’s managed to engineer a prolonged stay in power beyond the recent norm of a decade, and he’s also seemingly knocked off credible rivals or suppressed younger successors.

“He does appear to have favourites who he elevated at the last party Congress, but they’re not expected to replace him anytime soon.   The seven men who share the top podium with him are a mix of Party ideologues (Wang Huning), experienced older hands (Wang Qishan) and others who have worked their way up as provincial Party bosses (Li Keqiang, Wang Yang, Han Zheng).

“What more do we know about them? Well, not much, as these blokes rarely do interviews, their public ideological positions generally follow the party line and the leadership is so secretive that you never get any gossipy leaks to domestic or foreign media about factional rivalry or tensions. It’s extraordinary how well the communist leadership guards its secrets, given the number of people involved at the top and the personal ambitions many of them must hold.

“The penalties for ‘leaking’ information must be dire. Among his top leadership group, one was rumoured to have secret family ownership or a stake in a huge Chinese conglomerate. The daughter of another one Li Zhanshu, China’s 3rd-ranked leader, owns a 15 million dollar apartment in Hong Kong, according to the New York Times.

“Worth noting too that despite all the nationalism and his feisty rhetoric about the US, Xi Jinping sent his daughter Xi Mingze to Harvard for her university studies. But that was before he rose to China’s top job. These days, I doubt any top leaders would dare send their kids to the US given the rising tension and the hyper nationalism that Xi has fostered.”

And here’s Stan Grant:

“Xi Jinping has torn up the order of succession. He has rewritten the constitution and is now president for life. This is dangerous and worries people in China. It does not mean he cannot be overthrown. There is still a ruling Politburo.

“There are still significant figures like Premier Li Keqiang. China has a history of brutal power struggle. Xi himself has used his power to silence and oust others who may have been a threat to him. He is walking a high wire: it is all or nothing for Xi.”

He delivered a defiant speech at an event marking the centenary of the ruling Communist Party on Thursday.

Mr Xi also said Beijing would not allow “sanctimonious preaching”, in remarks widely seen as directed at the US.

It comes as China faces criticism over alleged human rights abuses and its crackdown in Hong Kong.

Relations between the US and China have worsened in recent times over trade, espionage and the pandemic.

The issue of Taiwan is also a major source of tension. While democratic Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state, Beijing views the island as a breakaway province.

The US, under its own laws, is required to provide Taiwan with the means to defend itself should Beijing use force to take the island back.

On Thursday Mr Xi said China maintains an “unshakeable commitment” to unification with Taiwan.

“No one should underestimate the resolve, the will and ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Getty ImagesMilitary aircraft flew in formation to mark the 100th anniversary

The 100th anniversary celebrations on Thursday morning saw military jet fly-pasts, cannon salutes and patriotic songs played.

A carefully vetted crowd were in attendance in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square, many of whom were not wearing masks.

The country has seen a media blitz in recent weeks promoting a party-approved version of China’s history.

Hong Kong is also marking its handover anniversary on the same day.

Getty ImagesPeople in the streets of Beijing waving at planes flying in formation to Tiananmen Square

What stood out in Xi’s message?

Mr Xi, who spoke for around an hour, reiterated the role of the party in modern China, saying that it has been central to the country’s growth and that attempts to separate it from the people would “fail”.

“Only socialism can save China, and only socialism with Chinese characteristics can develop China,” he said.

He added that “we will never allow anyone to bully, oppress or subjugate China”.

“Anyone who dares try to do that will have their heads bashed bloody against the Great Wall of Steel forged by over 1.4 billion Chinese people,” he said.

China has repeatedly accused the US of trying to curb its growth – and these comments are also seen as a reference to Washington.

On Hong Kong and Macau – which he said both retain a “high degree of autonomy” – they should “accurately implement the principles of ‘One Country, Two Systems”.

Xi Jinping, modern China’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong, wore a light grey suit which appeared to be identical to the one worn by the Communist Party founder in the famous portrait that adorns one side of Tiananmen Square. Mr Xi praised his people for the “new world” he said they had created. What he was also saying was that this is a world that could not have come into being without the Party.

At one point military jets flew over the crowd in formation of the number 100; flown by pilots loyal to the Party and the people. It’s easy to forget when you live here but a key part of the Communist Party strategy has been to try to morph the Party and the machinery of government and the perception of the nation of China into one.

They attribute any success, progress, advancement – and there has been phenomenal economic advancement – to the people and the government but most of all the Party. Just to make sure the message went out loud and clear, at the end of the ceremony, the crowd sung a song called “

Without the Communist Party There Would Be No New China”.How did China prepare for this anniversary? The Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which was founded in 1921, came to power 72 years ago after a long civil war. In that time the country has undergone massive changes – but some of these milestones were conspicuously missing in the propaganda drive. How to handle the China Communist Party at 100

On Monday, an art performance titled The Great Journey was staged at the Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing, where performers put on extravagant set-pieces detailing the history of the party and country. But significant events such the Cultural Revolution purges, the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, and the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong were missing, reported AFP news agency.Getty ImagesThe Great Journey showcased party history highlights, but some chapters were reportedly omitted.

A segment of Monday’s show was dedicated to how China beat Covid-19 since April, Chinese cinemas were ordered to screen propaganda films, known as “red films”, at least twice a week: A song, called 100%, that praised China’s achievements and featured 100 rappers was also released.”Red tourism” has also become popular, with travel companies such as Ctrip launching 100 unique routes for “red pilgrims”.

Tourists have been thronging “red tourism” sites such as the Memorial of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China in ShanghaiBut not all were pleased with the propaganda. “Now when I turn on the TV at night, dozens of stations are airing dramas about revolutionary wars,” a Beijing resident told BBC Chinese.

#AceNewsReport – June.27: A suspect in a domestic violence disturbance fatally shot a California cop while saying “Hey police” as he opened his front door, graphic video shows.

California cop killed responding to domestic disturbance AND both Officer Lowe and Jimmy Inn were pronounced dead in the hospital

Fox News Flash top headlines for June 24

*WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT*

The footage, released Tuesday by the Stockton Police Department, shows the instant Lance Lowe, 30, shot Officer Jimmy Inn as the cop responded to a residence on May 11 for a report of a domestic disturbance. A caller told police a woman was bleeding and appeared to have been assaulted, Chief Eric Jones said.

Police,” Inn says while knocking on a metal screen door at the home, the clip shows.

Seconds later, as screaming can be heard in the background, Lowe emerges from the doorway and opens fire on Inn, striking the officer multiple times, Jones said.

“Hey police,” Lowe says while opening the door, just before firing at the officer.

Inn immediately falls to the ground and wails in pain, the shocking footage shows. A second officer, Pancho Freer, later arrives on the scene, where he saw Lowe standing over Inn, and then opening fire in his direction.

Freer returns fire from inside his police cruiser while telling a dispatcher that his partner had been shot.

“Jimmy, you all right?” Freer asks, but got no response. “Shot fired, my partner is down … Jimmy, stay with me! Jimmy?!”

Freer then tells Lowe, who briefly went back inside, to “let the kid go” as he held his 8-year-old son in the front yard. Lowe then started to strangle the boy while refusing to comply with Freer’s commands, according to the footage.

“Don’t do it!” Freer tells Lowe. “Let the kid go, man. I don’t want to kill you.”

As Freer held Lowe at gunpoint, another man at the scene tackles the suspect, freeing his son.

Freer then fired multiple times, striking Lowe, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital, along with Inn, Jones said in a video statement.

“As difficult as it may be to see and hear for many of us, we believe the release of this information is part of our principles of transparency,” Jones said of the “traumatic” police-involved shooting.

The woman, whom witnesses said had been assaulted, fled the scene before cops arrived, but spoke to investigators days later, Jones said.

The chaotic footage ends as Freer shot Lowe several times as he was on the ground. Another man nearby says “Hey, watch,” as he narrowly got out of the way, the clip shows.

Cops found a gun inside Lowe’s home following the shooting. The 8-year-old boy, meanwhile, was medically cleared and released to his mother’s custody, Jones said.

Law enforcement officers from across California attended Inn’s funeral on May 19, CBS Sacramento reported. The father of three and five-year department vet was married to a fellow Stockton police officer, according to the station.

“These men and woman are putting their lives on the line, sacrificing themselves potentially each and every day for people whom they’ve never met before and that was the case for Jimmy Inn,” Jones said at the service.

(HONG KONG) JUST IN: Free Press Report: Police raid ‘Apple Daily News’ office and seize journalistic materials saying they are being arrested under national security #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.17: It was the second time in 10 months that the newspaper, founded by Jimmy Lai, had been raided. Police said the warrant used on Thursday was issued under the security legislation, and gave them power to search for and seize journalistic material:

#AceDailyNews says for a second time ……HONG KONG: Police raid Apple Daily office, editor-in-chief among 5 arrested under national security law over articles: Hundreds of Hong Kong police officers raided the pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily on Thursday and arrested five senior executives on suspicion of violating the national security law by publishing articles which called for sanctions on Beijing or the city.

Lai, 73, who was arrested during the first raid last August, is serving 20 months in prison for protest-related offences and also faces charges under the Beijing-imposed security law, which provides for penalties of up to life imprisonment.

Police said four men and one woman – aged 47 to 63 – were apprehended for allegedly colluding with foreign forces to endanger national security. At least two of them were handcuffed.Apple Daily’s editor-in-chief Ryan Law is led away. Photo: Apple Daily.

According to local media, those arrested included Next Digital CEO Cheung Kim-hung and Chief Operating Officer Royston Chow, Apple Daily’s Editor-in-Chief Ryan Law, Associate Publisher Chan Pui-man and Cheung Chi-wai, who manages the newspaper’s online news platform. All were arrested in the early hours at their homes.

National Security Unit Senior Superintendent Steve Li said the operation was launched at 6 a.m. and involved around 500 officers. He said HK$18 million worth of assets belonging to three companies linked to Apple Daily had been frozen.

Li said the alleged offence involved around 30 Chinese and English Apple Daily articles published since 2019. He said the articles were “strong evidence” and the “focus” of an alleged conspiracy of asking foreign powers to impose sanctions on China or Hong Kong.

Asked whether the articles in question were news articles or opinion pieces, Li did not give a direct response: “The natures of the articles is very simple, just inciting, requesting the foreign country to impose sanctions to Hong Kong and the People’s Republic of China. Very straightforward.”Photo: Apple Daily.

Asked whether citizens would risk violating the security law by sharing such articles, Li said police would have to look at the intention. “But as a law enforcer, I have some advice for people – do not draw suspicion to yourself, if it is not something you wish to spread.”A police private vehicle carries Apple Daily’s Editor-in-Chief Ryan Law to the Apple Daily office on June 17, 2021. Police said the five arrested senior executives are being detained for investigation. The tabloid’s chief editor Law was seen being escorted by police to the newspaper’s office at around 9.30 am.

Next Digital chief executive Cheung Kim-hung arrived in the Tseung Kwan O office in handcuffs at around 10 am. Police forced their way into Chan Pui-man’s flat, according to StandNews. Photo: StandNews.

“The operation, still ongoing, aims at gathering evidence for a case of suspected contravention of the National Security Law,” a police statement read.

According to Apple Daily, some police officers accessed reporters’ computers and searched for information. Journalists were told to leave the editorial department and wait elsewhere. Reporters were told by editorial management to carry on with their work assignments today, a senior reporter told HKFP.

Trading halted

Next Digital suspended trading before the market opened, according to a stock exchange notice.

Lai was arrested last August for alleged collusion with foreign forces and conspiracy to defraud. Over 200 police entered the newspaper’s headquarters on that occasion and seized at least 30 boxes of evidence. Police register information of those who enter the Apple Daily office building on June 17, 2021. The media mogul later faced an additional charge in April for allegedly conspiring to collude with foreign powers. He was said to have connived with his top aide Mark Simon, activist Andy Li, legal assistant Chan Tsz-wah and self-exiled activist Finn Lau. He also stands accused of conspiring to pervert the course of justice by allegedly helping activist Li flee Hong Kong.Jimmy Lai. File photo: StudioIncendo.

Lai is set to stand trial in the city’s High Court, where the maximum penalty is life in prison. He is currently serving 20 months behind bars for three unauthorised 2019 protests.

In June 2020, Beijing inserted national security legislation directly into Hong Kong’s mini-constitution – bypassing the local legislature – following a year of pro-democracy protests and unrest. It criminalised subversion, secession, colliusion with foreign forces and terrorist acts, which were broadly defined to include disruption to public transport and other infrastructure. The move gave police sweeping new powers, alarming democrats, civil society groups and trade partners, as such laws have been used broadly to silence and punish dissidents in China. However, the authorities say it has restored stability and peace to the city.

Strong winds hit coastal areas on Thursday and are continuing to cause problems

Several areas of south and mid Wales had been affected by power outages, according to Western Power Distribution

More than 1,000 properties in Rhondda Cynon Taf, more than 300 on the Gower Peninsula and nearly 300 in northern Cardiff were left without electricity earlier – but power has been restored in most areas of Wales.

A family in Bridgend described how they felt “panic” when they saw their roof blow off their home.

Adam PreddyThe fire service was called when a roof was blown off at Park Street in BridgendPhillip Dyke and Gaelle Stephan saw the roof blow off their home in Bridgend

“We called the fire brigade and within about an hour the roof came past our window and landed on the street,” said Phillip Dyke, who lives with his partner Gaelle and their 11-month-old baby.

“It was like something from a film.”

Ms Stephan said she was in “disbelief” as she saw the top of building come off, like it was “not really real.”

It comes after a surfer had to be rescued after getting into difficulty off Anglesey on Thursday.

Train services across south Wales are also disrupted, with lines closed and trains delayed.

Flooding also meant services were suspended on the Conwy Valley line in north Wales between Llanrwst and Blaenau Ffestiniog.

In Ceredigion, the A487 between Cardigan and Penbryn was closed in both direction on Friday evening due to fallen trees.

In addition to flood alerts across Wales, Natural Resources Wales has also issued a full flood warning for the Lower Dee Valley in north-east Wales.

Wet and windy end to the week before settling down

The yellow warning will be in force from 15:00 Thursday evening through to 21:00 Friday night, with some delays to transport likely and damage to outdoor temporary structures possible, as well as some tree damage.

The wind warning coincides with further unsettled weather across much of the UK, as an area of low pressure moves in from the west on Thursday, bringing continued wet and windy weather for the UK. The heaviest rain on Thursday will fall in Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northwest Wales and northern England with between 40mm and 60mm expected in places.

Outbreaks of heavy rain will continue for much of the UK into Friday while the wind warning is in place for southern areas but the low pressure system will gradually clear out into the North Sea later on Friday, leaving continued showery remnants for the weekend.

Chief Meteorologist Dan Suri said: “The low pressure system moving in from the west is going to bring some heavy rain across much of the UK from Thursday and into Friday. With wind looking to be strongest in southern coastal areas, as well as Wales, there’s a chance of some disruption to travel plans and potential damage to temporary structures, such as tents and marquees.”

There will be plenty of sunshine on offer out there this afternoon with highs of 18 °C 🌤️

However it won’t be entirely dry, particularly in the east, as there’ll be some heavy showers around with a risk of thunder ⛈️ pic.twitter.com/KKUqhKIzOl— Met Office (@metoffice) May 19, 2021

Despite unsettled conditions continuing through the weekend, there is a sign of drier conditions to come from Tuesday, with some indications of temperatures starting to climb towards more typical figures for the time of year. This spell of weather will likely keep nights cooler than the long-term average, but warmer days compared to what we’ve seen recently.

Dan added: “There are some glimmers of hope in the forecast into next week, with more settled weather possible from Tuesday. In areas of prolonged sunshine, we should be seeing some quite pleasant conditions, but night temperatures will continue to stay stubbornly low.” https://www.youtube.com/embed/XlqQfPkb9vA?rel=0

May so far has been cooler and wetter than average. although still not at record levels for the month. The full review of May’s weather will be available at the end of the month.

(AMERICA) OPED: A new HBO documentary called ‘The Crime of the Century’ lays bare how firms like Purdue used bribery, dodgy marketing, and shady political deals to make fortunes by getting millions hooked on super-strong painkillers #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.17: Perhaps it might take the form of slick music videos and glossy magazine ads promising an ‘end to pain’. Certainly, they would minimise the negative effects of their drugs on your life, your future, and your loved ones. If questioned about what they were doing, we can imagine them blaming those who use their drugs, not themselves for providing them:

AMERICA: ‘A glorified drug cartel whose dealers wore lab coats, suits and ties’: how Big Pharma made Americans addicted to opioids’ …..What would it look like if an illegal international drug cartel were allowed to advertise?

‘A glorified drug cartel whose dealers wore lab coats, suits and ties’: how Big Pharma made Americans addicted to opioids

By Ashley Frawley, Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Social Policy at Swansea University and the author of Semiotics of Happiness: Rhetorical Beginnings of a Public Problem. Follow her on Twitter @Ashleyafrawley

It sounds mad – madder still that anyone would believe them – but this is exactly what has been allowed to happen with large pharmaceutical companies and their marketing of highly addictive opioid drugs.

At least, this is the argument put forward in a new two-part HBO documentary series released this week entitled, ‘The Crime of the Century’. Across its nearly four-hour run-time, director Alex Gibney lays bare the bribery, underhanded marketing tactics, and shady political dealings that enabled the devastating overproduction and over-distribution of synthetic opiates. In devastating detail, the documentary portrays American pharmaceutical companies and the doctors who recklessly doled out prescriptions as elements of a glorified drug cartel – dealers in lab coats, suits and ties.

‘Completely inappropriate’: Top scientists denounce Big Pharma for implying annual Covid booster shots are crucial

‘Completely inappropriate’: Top scientists denounce Big Pharma for implying annual Covid booster shots are crucial

Systematically overselling the benefits of synthetic opioids and downplaying the risk of addiction, the documentary traces how drug companies are driven to pursue ever stronger and more exotic medications as patents on old treatments run out and profits dry up. In many ways, it traverses territory that is already well known, but is no less useful for highlighting in shocking detail just how much these companies have become a major risk to public health.

This is particularly true in their penchant for ‘discovering’ and treating ever more chronic conditions. While the efficacy of opioids for treatment of acute pain and end-of-life care has been well known, there is little incentive to develop and provide drugs solely for such patients, who tend to be few and far between and whose needs are often short-term. No, the real money is in long-term use in greater numbers. And this is where the dangers of pushing these drugs on patients with any kind of pain became increasingly clear.

Through heart-rending stories of suffering and loss, Gibney adeptly shows how a deadly cocktail of business incentives to push for over-prescription at escalating doses, inherent addictiveness, and, in some cases, communities facing economic despair, combined to produce the ‘perfect storm’ that became the opioid crisis.

In one story, a former heroin addict details his experience being used as a human guinea pig, prescribed a daily dose of pills equivalent to 200 hits of heroin. In another, a victim whose family described her as living a happy, functional life using nothing more than Tylenol was prescribed high doses of a range of opioids and muscle relaxants that regularly rendered her unconscious. One day her husband found her dead next to a phone that she’d attempted to use to call for help.

What could possibly fuel such enormous failure of caution? The obvious answer is greed and profit. Indeed, the meagre payouts and settlements companies like Purdue Pharma were ordered to pay over the years paled in comparison to the eye-watering profits they made misrepresenting their drugs. But the story is much deeper. The ‘opioid epidemic’ itself was preceded by claims that most Americans were actually being undertreated. What is more, they were being left callously to suffer in an ‘epidemic of pain’. Throughout the series, company representatives and even policymakers refer over and over to a ‘growing epidemic’ of pain suffered by millions.

This is what prepared the ground for the epidemic of over-prescription, permitting claims detailed in the documentary like “chronic pain patients can’t be addicts”, and the development of pseudoscientific terms like ‘pseudoaddiction’. The latter reflects an attempt to assuage the growing fears of prescribing physicians that the person before them is indeed becoming addicted to the drugs they were being prescribed. No, they only appear this way because they are in so much pain. You must help them. Prescribe more:

And prescribe more they did and release the power within as scientists develop method to enhance body’s own painkillers in major breakthrough

While it is easy to blame this situation on the greed of companies like Purdue Pharma and the owning Sackler family that lived luxuriously in its shadow, they would not have found such a ready market had they not been able to feed and exploit a culture with a preexisting aversion to pain. Indeed, many of the physicians and sales executives responsible for pushing large doses of highly addictive pain medications justified their actions with their belief that a life with pain was a life not worth living. They had convinced themselves that any pain was worse than death.

Supplanting everything that once made life meaningful, the pursuit of health and even mental health have become ultimate goals. The notion that one might tolerate pain, whether physical or psychic, is seen as beyond the pale. It is no longer, ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.’ Any pain or negative experience is seen as intensely damaging to the human psyche.

In a life without meaning, any pain becomes unbearable. We all become patients in waiting. Easy targets for these drug dealers in suits and ties.

(NEW DELHI, India.) #Coronavirus Report: Ashish Poddar kept an ice pack on hand as he waited outside a New Delhi hospital for a black market dealer to deliver two drugs for his father, who was gasping for breath inside with #COVID19 #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealhtReport – Apr.29: Poddar had been told by the private hospital treating his father, Raj Kumar Poddar, that remdesivir, an antiviral, and tocilizumab, a drug that blunts human immune responses, were needed to keep the 68-year-old man alive:

But the drugs never arrived, the ice that was intended to keep the medicines cool melted and his father died hours later:

AP News

As Indians turn to black market, unproven drugs as virus surges: As India faces a devastating surge of new coronavirus infections overwhelming its health care system, people are taking desperate measures to try to keep loved ones alive.

In some cases they are turning to unproven medical treatments, in others to the black market for life-saving medications that are in short supply.

Like most hospitals and pharmacies in the Indian capital, stocks had run out. Desperate, Poddar turned to a dealer who promised the medicines after taking an advance of almost $1,000.

“It’s nearby” and “coming” read some of the texts that Ashish received as he waited.

“I wish he had at least told me that he isn’t going to come. I could have searched elsewhere,” the grieving son said.

India set another global record in new virus cases Thursday with more than 379,000 new infections, putting even more pressure on the country’s overwhelmed hospitals. The country of nearly 1.4 billion people has now recorded over 18 million cases, behind only the U.S., and over 200,000 deaths — though the true number is believed to be higher.

Death is so omnipresent that burial grounds are running out of space in many cities and glowing funeral pyres blaze through the night.

The few medicines known to help treat COVID-19, such as remdesivir and steroids in hospitalized patients, are scarce. The most basic treatment —oxygen therapy — is also in short supply, leading to unnecessary deaths. Even hospital beds are scarce. There were just 14 free intensive care beds available in New Delhi, a city of 29 million people, on Thursday morning.

India’s latest treatment guidelines mirror those of the World Health Organization and the United States with a key exception: India allows mildly ill patients to be given hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin, drugs used for certain tropical diseases.

There is little evidence they work against COVID-19, and the WHO strongly recommends against hydroxychloroquine’s use for COVID-19 of any severity and against using ivermectin except in studies.

While India is a leading producer of medicine globally, its regulation of drugs was poor even before the pandemic. And mounting despair is driving people to try anything.

Dr. Amar Jesani, a medical ethics expert, said many prescription drugs can be bought over the counter, including emergency drugs greenlit by Indian authorities for COVID-19.

“Hospitals and doctors are so used to having a ‘magic bullet’ that will cure you,” he said, explaining the use of unproven drugs as COVID-19 cases skyrocket.

When Suman Shrivastava, 57, was infected with the virus, her doctor in Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state, prescribed ivermectin. When her symptoms worsened, her doctor then asked her to take favipiravir, an antiviral, though it is unproven against COVID-19.

Her nephew, Rajat Shrivastava, said that drug was hard to find but he eventually located it in a pharmacy which was rationing its supplies by giving a single strip daily to each patient. He eventually bought extra doses from an online volunteer on Twitter and now his aunt is doing well.

Dr. Anant Bhan, who researches public health and ethics in the city of Bhopal, warns there are risks in the do-it-yourself approach. Bhan said antivirals and steroids should be taken in a hospital setting due to the risk of side effects. And drugs that are life-saving at one point could be harmful at another, depending on timing and how severe the symptoms are.

“It’s scary because these aren’t vitamin pills,” he said.

Black market prices for remdesivir, which is produced by several Indian companies, have increased up to 20-fold to about $1,000 for a single vial, said Siddhant Sarang, a volunteer with Yuva Halla Bol, a youth activist group which is helping patients find medicines and hospital beds.

In September, federal data showed that Indian drug makers had made over 2.4 million vials of the drug. But when cases dipped in September, companies destroyed much of their expired stock and production declined.

India was then slow to respond to the uptick of infections in February, and production was only scaled up in March. Earlier this week, Merck announced a deal with five makers of generic drugs in India to produce molnupiravir, an experimental antiviral similar to remdesivir, which is given by IV, but in a more convenient pill form. It’s unclear when that might become available.

With demand high, black market dealers are insisting on cash upfront, said Sarang.

“People are going to dealers with 200,000 to 300,000 rupees ($2,700-$4,000) in a suitcase,” he said.

Authorities have started cracking down on the dealers. In New Delhi, for instance, raids are being carried out on shops or people suspected of hoarding oxygen cylinders and medicines.

Despite all the desperate efforts, medicines that work remain unavailable to many.

Virus-blocking antibody drugs, widely used elsewhere, aren’t yet authorized in India. Roche, which works with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals on marketing one such treatment, said Wednesday it is negotiating with India to speed up emergency use. American drug maker Eli Lilly, which makes a similar treatment, said it is in discussions with the Indian government.

Stuti Bhardwaj, 37, went from one pharmacy to another in southern New Delhi this week. Her parents, both in their seventies, were not able to get tests but showed symptoms of COVID-19 and had dangerously low oxygen levels. A doctor advised a host of medications, including hydroxychloroquine.

She eventually found it and bought it, aware it was unlikely to work.

“My parents are dying,” Bhardwaj said. “I am desperate.”

Call for Snowdon to only be known by Welsh name Yr Wyddfa: ‘It follows a motion brought by a Gwynedd county councillor that Snowdonia National Park authorities be asked to only refer to Snowdon as Yr Wyddfa, and Snowdonia as Eryri’ but 12 hours ago: There were mixed responses about the proposals

The mountain in Snowdonia National Park stands at 3,560ft (1,085m) and attracts about 400,000 walkers a year.

But the park authority said a task group would consider the proposal.

Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA) said the motion was not discussed at a meeting on Wednesday as it would be considered by its task group, set up to adapt guidelines on the use of Welsh place names.

What’s in a name?

Getty ImagesSnowdon – or Yr Wyddfa – is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560ft (1,085m)

The Welsh name for Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa, means grave and is pronounced like “er with-va”.

The story goes in a legend that the giant Rhita Gawr, the king of Wales, was buried under a cairn of stones on the summit of the mountain, following a battle with King Arthur.

It is said that the giant defeated 30 kings of Britain, taking their beards to create a cloak of the beards, reaching from his shoulder to the floor.

Meanwhile, Eryri, the Welsh name for Snowdonia, is believed to originate from the Latin: oriri (to rise) and was first documented in the 9th Century, despite it long being thought to refer to the Welsh name for eagle – Eryr, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The English names for Snowdonia and Snowdon are thought to derive from the Saxon: snow dune, meaning snow hill.

Has this happened elsewhere?

Getty ImagesMount Everest’s Tibetan name is Chomolungma, meaning goddess mother of the world

The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is not commonly known by its Tibetan name Chomolungma, meaning goddess mother of the world.

Many Sherpas, a community indigenous to the Himalayan region, believe that the summit of Chomolungma is home to the Buddhist goddess Miyolangsangma.

Its English name comes from Colonel Sir George Everest, who was born in Crickhowell, Powys, in 1790, who was a Surveyor General of India.

Meanwhile, Australia’s giant monolith Ayers Rock was renamed Uluru in 1993, switching from its colonial namesake, former South Australian Premier Sir Henry Ayers, to the language of its traditional owners, the Anangu people.

In 2002, that dual name was officially reversed, making it Uluru/Ayers Rock. Almost all Australians now refer to it as Uluru.

Getty ImagesSnowdonia National Park said about 10 million visitor days were spent in Snowdonia – or Eryri – each year

Councillor John Pughe Roberts, who put forward the motion for Snowdon and Snowdonia, said many members were “complaining that people are changing house names, rock names, renaming the mountains”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cymru’s Dros Frecwast programme, Mr Roberts, who represents Corris Mawddwy in Gwynedd, said: “In this area, for example Bwlch y Groes has become Hellfire Pass, Dol Hir is known as Longmeadow and this is happening in many areas.”

After learning of the decision that his motion was to be considered by the park authority’s task group, he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he was “naturally disappointed”.

“There’s much talk of people wrongly changing Welsh house names into English and long established place names being eradicated, but the public sector has a duty to lead the way here rather than insisting on this bureaucracy of kicking the can down the road to another committee,” he said.

SNPA chairman Wyn Ellis Jones said: “Authority members decided that there was no need to consider the motion today as a Welsh place names task and finish group has already been appointed.

“This follows previous consideration by the members in a working group which recommended to establish and adopt guidelines to guide the use of place names by the SNPA.”

He also said authority members would consider these issues once the task group was able to make recommendations.

“The authority is committed to protect and promote the use of native place names for everyday use and future generations,” he added.

(COLOMBO, Sri Lanka.) JUST IN: Police on Saturday arrested a prominent Muslim lawmaker and his brother over suspected connections to the Easter Sunday suicide bombings in 2019 that killed 269 people #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.25: Two local Muslim groups that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group have been blamed for the six near-simultaneous blasts at two Roman Catholic churches, a Protestant church and three tourist hotels. Both Muslims and Catholics are minorities in Sri Lanka, where Buddhists make up 70% of the population:

Sri Lanka arrests top Muslim leader over 2019 Easter attacks: ‘Rishad Bathiudeen is a former Cabinet minister who currently leads an opposition party in Sri Lanka’s Parliament. He and his brother, Reyaj Bathiudeen, were arrested in the capital for allegedly “aiding and abetting the suicide bombers who committed the Easter Sunday carnage,” said police spokesman Ajith Rohana. He said the brothers have not yet been officially charged but were arrested based on direct evidence, as well as what he called circumstantial and “scientific” evidence’

Before his arrest Saturday, Bathiudeen wrote on Facebook that police were outside his house “since 1:30 a.m. today attempting to arrest me without a charge. … They have already arrested my brother. I have been in Parliament, and have cooperated with all lawful authorities until now. This is unjust.”

Rushdhie Habeeb, a lawyer representing Bathiudeen, called the arrests politically motivated and said, “No reasons for the arrest had been given at the time of their arrest by those who conducted the midnight raid.”

In his statement, Habeeb said the purpose was to “punish the political leadership of the Muslims, which had nothing to do with 21/4, for the dastardly acts of some Muslim youths who were widely alleged as having been used as pawns by foreign powers.”

The arrests came amid growing demands for justice by Sri Lanka’s Catholic leaders and community, including during a commemoration held Wednesday on the second anniversary of the attacks. Last month, Sri Lankan Catholics also attended Mass dressed in black and held placards in a silent “Black Sunday” protest.

Most of the people connected to the groups accused of carrying out the attacks have been arrested, but Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has insisted the bombings couldn’t have been planned by the leader who committed suicide in one of the attacks.

The government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who came to power later in 2019 after promising to determine the truth behind the attacks, is under pressure to find the mastermind.

His government accused an Islamic cleric arrested soon after the attacks of being the organizer, but the claim has not been accepted by the Catholic Church, which suspects there was larger foreign involvement.

Ranjith, the archbishop, has said a presidential commission that investigated the attacks focused on failures by those in political power at the time to prevent the bombings, instead of on finding the people who were directly responsible.

A power struggle between the then-president and prime minister, which led to a communications breakdown and a resulting lapse in security coordination, is said to have enabled the attacks, which occurred despite prior foreign intelligence warnings.

(USA) Digital Currency Report: Facebook plans to launch a ‘Stable Coin’ to compete with U.S dollar & Morgan Stanley warns of China’s central bank currency next year #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.21: A couple of days ago, Morgan Stanley warned that China’s new digital renminbi – the first “central bank digital currency” (or CBDC) –could cement its status as the next reserve currency:

Facebook Plans To Launch Stablecoin That Will Compete With Dollar Early Next Year: Morgan Stanley warned China new digital currency could arrive next year ….

Morgan Stanley: If A CBDC Gains Acceptance For International Transactions, It Could Become The New Reserve Currency

By Chetan Ahya, Morgan Stanley’s Chief Economist and Global Head of Economics

Central Bank Digital Currencies – The Next Disruption: We do not usually associate disruption with central banks. But a major move to introduce central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could actually disrupt the financial system:

CBDCs are a new form of digital cash intended to serve as a substitute for physical cash. They will be a liability of the central bank, which will maintain them in a centralized ledger. CBDCs should not be confused with cryptocurrencies, which either are pegged to an underlying asset or backed by a public blockchain. Cryptocurrencies are not a viable form of digital cash for payments on a large scale, given the high computational and energy intensity of the validation process using distributed ledger technologies. However, they will continue to perform other functions. For instance, investors may perceive that cryptocurrencies can be a store of value (akin to precious metals) to hedge against the effects of central banks’ aggressive monetary easing.

Efforts to introduce CBDCs are gaining momentum, with as many as 86% of the world’s central banks exploring digital currencies. China has launched pilot trials in a number of cities, the ECB recently concluded a public consultation on a digital euro and will make a decision this summer, and the Boston Fed is set to release its initial research in the fall.

What explains this sudden concerted interest? We see three main reasons:

  1. Monetary sovereignty: Private payment networks have proliferated rapidly. As they gain market share, these networks can become the primary means of transaction for many users. The central banks’ concern is that money will circulate almost exclusively within the networks, posing a threat to central bank control of the monetary system.
  2. Financial stability: Any potential failure by a private provider of digital money could disrupt the payment system and lead to financial stability risks. While regulators have taken steps to mitigate these risks, they cannot eliminate them. In contrast, the central bank both creates and holds a CBDC, hence will be able to guarantee its reliability as a medium of exchange for transactions.
  3. Financial inclusion: The rise of private, narrow money networks risks excluding segments of the general public, e.g., the unbanked population. A CBDC, just like physical cash, can be made broadly available and may even foster greater financial inclusion.

With these objectives in mind, we think that central banks will implement consumer-facing retail digital currencies, accessible to the public through financial intermediaries and running on a centralized ledger system controlled by monetary authorities.

Nevertheless, when something as fundamental as what you use to make payments changes, the effects can be far-reaching.

Commercial banks will face the risk of disintermediation. Once CBDC accounts are launched, consumers will be able to transfer their bank deposits there, subject to limits imposed by the central banks. Moreover, the technological infrastructure of CBDCs will make it easier for new non-bank entities to enter the payments space and accelerate the transition towards digital payments. These factors will increase competitive pressures on commercial banks.

In a digital economy, data provide a competitive edge. We see a tug-of-war playing out between consumers who are privacy-conscious and want to keep their transactions anonymous and fintech companies that will innovate and incentivize consumers to get onto their platforms in order to acquire transaction data. If the fintechs’ efforts succeed, network effects could proliferate, allowing fintechs to take market share from banks.

CBDCs also have the potential to disrupt the international payments system. If a country’s CBDC gains acceptance for international transactions, significant advantages could accrue to the issuer country in financing costs and control over financial transactions, similar to the US dollar’s privileged role today. Some central banks like the ECB and the PBOC see the move towards digital currency as an opportunity to raise the international status of their currencies and increase their use in cross-border payments. On the other hand, emerging markets want to limit the use of foreign digital currencies in their economies (e-dollarization).

Innovations are typically viewed with caution and their disruptive potential is usually underestimated. While central banks’ CBDC initiatives are not intended to disrupt the banking system, they will likely have unintended disruptive consequences. The pace of disruption will hinge on how quickly network effects take hold in a CBDC system. The more widely digital currencies are accepted, the more opportunity for innovation and the greater the scope for disruption to the financial system.

The US tech giant shut YouTube accounts of Press TV late on Tuesday, citing “violations of community guidelines.”

The last time Google blocked Press TV’s access to its official YouTube account was last September, again without any prior notice but citing “violations of export laws.”

The United States export laws and regulations prohibit the use of and access to controlled information, goods, and technology for reasons of national security or protection of trade.

Google again blocks access to YouTube account of Iran’s Press TV

Over the past years, the US tech giant has recurrently been opting for such measures against Iranian media outlets. It has taken on Press TV more than any other Iranian outlet given the expanse of its viewership and readership.

The measure comes hot on the heels of another hostile move and aggression on the Iranian media outlets, with Facebook shutting down the page of Press TV news network.

The US-based social media giant informed Press TV on Friday that its account had been shut down for what it claimed to be the Iranian news channel’s failure to “follow our Community Standards.” The page was reinstated a few days later.

' Social Media War Machine Has Part to Play in Winning Hearts and Minds '

#AceWorldNewsGAZA CITY – July 26 – As part of Israel’s PR efforts during operation Cast Lead (2009), the IDF has established a Youtube channel to tell Israel’s side. As seen on Arutz Sheva. and supplied by israelnationalnews.com at the time it purported to have 7,000 followers and today as the screenshot shows it is down to 1,981.

Five years later, the involvement of the army in the documentation and dissemination of propaganda has increased, through YouTube videos and official accounts on Facebook and Twitter, which show a constant flow of messages.

Screenshot from 2014-07-26 14:31:51

Today’s media strategy includes dozens of infographics and visualizations that attempt to depict Israel’s rationale in a graphic and simple manner similar to that employed by the award-winning Visualizing Palestine project, which focused on visualizing the effects of occupation for Palestinians in Gaza.

One of the most viral visualizations shows how a house in Gaza becomes a target. “When is a house a home and when does it become a military target?”, the image reads, in response to accusations that Israel indiscriminately bombs houses in Gaza.

Another one compares “what Israel does to protect civilians” vs. “what Hamas does to endanger its civilians.”

An online struggle for “hearts and minds”

Israeli military operations are always accompanied by robust media reports that seem intended to mitigate their impact on international public opinion. From the sensorial “Cast Lead” in 2009 to the self-explanatory “Protective Edge” in 2014, several fronts of “hasbara” (pro-Israeli propaganda, in Hebrew) have been developed to show the world Israel’s rationale.

In 2008, just before attacks on Gaza began, the Israeli administration decided to replace traditional press conferences of war time with a wide array of initiatives based on social media. Guidelines for the campaign were developed by former army officer Yarden Vatikai, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Jewish Agency.

One of the initiatives consisted of teaching new media workshops to army officers in the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center.

“In terms of communicating our message, the future is in new media”, Defense Forces spokesman Avi Benayahu said in February 2009. “The IDF has moved online to win hearts and minds.”

‘ USS Release Un-Verified Tape of Intercepted Phone Calls of Malaysian Airlines Being Shot-Down By Mistake ‘

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – July 19 – The Ukrainian Security Service has released what it calls “intercepted phone conversations,” which are supposed to prove that Donetsk self-defense forces shot down Malaysia Airlines MH17 flight on Thursday – presumably, by mistake.

The 2:33 minute clip, which Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) posted on YouTube in Ukrainian, English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Turkish and Japanese versions, consists of three separate “conversations.”

The first “conversation” allegedly takes place between – according to SBU’s titles – militia group commander nicknamed Bes (“Igor Bezler”) and his alleged coordinator, “Vasily Geranin,” who is titled in the video as “a colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.”

“Bes” and “Geranin” are speaking about a downing of a jet, without clarifying if it’s a military or a civilian aircraft.

The second “conversation,” which allegedly happens between anti-Kiev militia members – nicknamed “Major” and “Grek” – reveals that the crashed plane was“a 100 per cent passenger aircraft.”

The third and final segment sets things straight as an unnamed “militia member” tells an alleged Cossack commander” titled as “Nikolay Kozitsin,” that there’s ‘Malaysia Airlines’ marking on the downed plane.
