(NEW DELHI, India.) #Coronavirus Report: Ashish Poddar kept an ice pack on hand as he waited outside a New Delhi hospital for a black market dealer to deliver two drugs for his father, who was gasping for breath inside with #COVID19 #AceHealthDesk report

#AceHealhtReport – Apr.29: Poddar had been told by the private hospital treating his father, Raj Kumar Poddar, that remdesivir, an antiviral, and tocilizumab, a drug that blunts human immune responses, were needed to keep the 68-year-old man alive:

But the drugs never arrived, the ice that was intended to keep the medicines cool melted and his father died hours later:

AP News

As Indians turn to black market, unproven drugs as virus surges: As India faces a devastating surge of new coronavirus infections overwhelming its health care system, people are taking desperate measures to try to keep loved ones alive.

In some cases they are turning to unproven medical treatments, in others to the black market for life-saving medications that are in short supply.

Like most hospitals and pharmacies in the Indian capital, stocks had run out. Desperate, Poddar turned to a dealer who promised the medicines after taking an advance of almost $1,000.

“It’s nearby” and “coming” read some of the texts that Ashish received as he waited.

“I wish he had at least told me that he isn’t going to come. I could have searched elsewhere,” the grieving son said.

India set another global record in new virus cases Thursday with more than 379,000 new infections, putting even more pressure on the country’s overwhelmed hospitals. The country of nearly 1.4 billion people has now recorded over 18 million cases, behind only the U.S., and over 200,000 deaths — though the true number is believed to be higher.

Death is so omnipresent that burial grounds are running out of space in many cities and glowing funeral pyres blaze through the night.

The few medicines known to help treat COVID-19, such as remdesivir and steroids in hospitalized patients, are scarce. The most basic treatment —oxygen therapy — is also in short supply, leading to unnecessary deaths. Even hospital beds are scarce. There were just 14 free intensive care beds available in New Delhi, a city of 29 million people, on Thursday morning.

India’s latest treatment guidelines mirror those of the World Health Organization and the United States with a key exception: India allows mildly ill patients to be given hydroxychloroquine or ivermectin, drugs used for certain tropical diseases.

There is little evidence they work against COVID-19, and the WHO strongly recommends against hydroxychloroquine’s use for COVID-19 of any severity and against using ivermectin except in studies.

While India is a leading producer of medicine globally, its regulation of drugs was poor even before the pandemic. And mounting despair is driving people to try anything.

Dr. Amar Jesani, a medical ethics expert, said many prescription drugs can be bought over the counter, including emergency drugs greenlit by Indian authorities for COVID-19.

“Hospitals and doctors are so used to having a ‘magic bullet’ that will cure you,” he said, explaining the use of unproven drugs as COVID-19 cases skyrocket.

When Suman Shrivastava, 57, was infected with the virus, her doctor in Kanpur city in Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state, prescribed ivermectin. When her symptoms worsened, her doctor then asked her to take favipiravir, an antiviral, though it is unproven against COVID-19.

Her nephew, Rajat Shrivastava, said that drug was hard to find but he eventually located it in a pharmacy which was rationing its supplies by giving a single strip daily to each patient. He eventually bought extra doses from an online volunteer on Twitter and now his aunt is doing well.

Dr. Anant Bhan, who researches public health and ethics in the city of Bhopal, warns there are risks in the do-it-yourself approach. Bhan said antivirals and steroids should be taken in a hospital setting due to the risk of side effects. And drugs that are life-saving at one point could be harmful at another, depending on timing and how severe the symptoms are.

“It’s scary because these aren’t vitamin pills,” he said.

Black market prices for remdesivir, which is produced by several Indian companies, have increased up to 20-fold to about $1,000 for a single vial, said Siddhant Sarang, a volunteer with Yuva Halla Bol, a youth activist group which is helping patients find medicines and hospital beds.

In September, federal data showed that Indian drug makers had made over 2.4 million vials of the drug. But when cases dipped in September, companies destroyed much of their expired stock and production declined.

India was then slow to respond to the uptick of infections in February, and production was only scaled up in March. Earlier this week, Merck announced a deal with five makers of generic drugs in India to produce molnupiravir, an experimental antiviral similar to remdesivir, which is given by IV, but in a more convenient pill form. It’s unclear when that might become available.

With demand high, black market dealers are insisting on cash upfront, said Sarang.

“People are going to dealers with 200,000 to 300,000 rupees ($2,700-$4,000) in a suitcase,” he said.

Authorities have started cracking down on the dealers. In New Delhi, for instance, raids are being carried out on shops or people suspected of hoarding oxygen cylinders and medicines.

Despite all the desperate efforts, medicines that work remain unavailable to many.

Virus-blocking antibody drugs, widely used elsewhere, aren’t yet authorized in India. Roche, which works with Regeneron Pharmaceuticals on marketing one such treatment, said Wednesday it is negotiating with India to speed up emergency use. American drug maker Eli Lilly, which makes a similar treatment, said it is in discussions with the Indian government.

Stuti Bhardwaj, 37, went from one pharmacy to another in southern New Delhi this week. Her parents, both in their seventies, were not able to get tests but showed symptoms of COVID-19 and had dangerously low oxygen levels. A doctor advised a host of medications, including hydroxychloroquine.

She eventually found it and bought it, aware it was unlikely to work.

“My parents are dying,” Bhardwaj said. “I am desperate.”

(WALES) JUST IN: Changing the name of ‘Snowdon’ as councillor proposes it should be called by its ‘Welsh Name’ but the proposal receives a mixed response #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.29: Wales’ highest mountain could only be called by its Welsh name under plans being considered by park authorities:

Call for Snowdon to only be known by Welsh name Yr Wyddfa: ‘It follows a motion brought by a Gwynedd county councillor that Snowdonia National Park authorities be asked to only refer to Snowdon as Yr Wyddfa, and Snowdonia as Eryri’ but 12 hours ago: There were mixed responses about the proposals

BBC Wales News
https://www.timjacksonphotography.co.uk/wp-content/siteuploads/2019/03/Snowdon-Sunrise-and-Cloud-Inversion-800×533.jpg

The mountain in Snowdonia National Park stands at 3,560ft (1,085m) and attracts about 400,000 walkers a year.

But the park authority said a task group would consider the proposal.

Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA) said the motion was not discussed at a meeting on Wednesday as it would be considered by its task group, set up to adapt guidelines on the use of Welsh place names.

What’s in a name?

Getty ImagesSnowdon – or Yr Wyddfa – is the highest mountain in Wales at 3,560ft (1,085m)

The Welsh name for Snowdon, Yr Wyddfa, means grave and is pronounced like “er with-va”.

The story goes in a legend that the giant Rhita Gawr, the king of Wales, was buried under a cairn of stones on the summit of the mountain, following a battle with King Arthur.

It is said that the giant defeated 30 kings of Britain, taking their beards to create a cloak of the beards, reaching from his shoulder to the floor.

Meanwhile, Eryri, the Welsh name for Snowdonia, is believed to originate from the Latin: oriri (to rise) and was first documented in the 9th Century, despite it long being thought to refer to the Welsh name for eagle – Eryr, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The English names for Snowdonia and Snowdon are thought to derive from the Saxon: snow dune, meaning snow hill.

Has this happened elsewhere?

Getty ImagesMount Everest’s Tibetan name is Chomolungma, meaning goddess mother of the world

The highest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is not commonly known by its Tibetan name Chomolungma, meaning goddess mother of the world.

Many Sherpas, a community indigenous to the Himalayan region, believe that the summit of Chomolungma is home to the Buddhist goddess Miyolangsangma.

Its English name comes from Colonel Sir George Everest, who was born in Crickhowell, Powys, in 1790, who was a Surveyor General of India.

Meanwhile, Australia’s giant monolith Ayers Rock was renamed Uluru in 1993, switching from its colonial namesake, former South Australian Premier Sir Henry Ayers, to the language of its traditional owners, the Anangu people.

In 2002, that dual name was officially reversed, making it Uluru/Ayers Rock. Almost all Australians now refer to it as Uluru.

Getty ImagesSnowdonia National Park said about 10 million visitor days were spent in Snowdonia – or Eryri – each year

Councillor John Pughe Roberts, who put forward the motion for Snowdon and Snowdonia, said many members were “complaining that people are changing house names, rock names, renaming the mountains”.

Speaking on BBC Radio Cymru’s Dros Frecwast programme, Mr Roberts, who represents Corris Mawddwy in Gwynedd, said: “In this area, for example Bwlch y Groes has become Hellfire Pass, Dol Hir is known as Longmeadow and this is happening in many areas.”

After learning of the decision that his motion was to be considered by the park authority’s task group, he told the Local Democracy Reporting Service he was “naturally disappointed”.

“There’s much talk of people wrongly changing Welsh house names into English and long established place names being eradicated, but the public sector has a duty to lead the way here rather than insisting on this bureaucracy of kicking the can down the road to another committee,” he said.

SNPA chairman Wyn Ellis Jones said: “Authority members decided that there was no need to consider the motion today as a Welsh place names task and finish group has already been appointed.

“This follows previous consideration by the members in a working group which recommended to establish and adopt guidelines to guide the use of place names by the SNPA.”

He also said authority members would consider these issues once the task group was able to make recommendations.

“The authority is committed to protect and promote the use of native place names for everyday use and future generations,” he added.

(COLOMBO, Sri Lanka.) JUST IN: Police on Saturday arrested a prominent Muslim lawmaker and his brother over suspected connections to the Easter Sunday suicide bombings in 2019 that killed 269 people #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.25: Two local Muslim groups that had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group have been blamed for the six near-simultaneous blasts at two Roman Catholic churches, a Protestant church and three tourist hotels. Both Muslims and Catholics are minorities in Sri Lanka, where Buddhists make up 70% of the population:

Sri Lanka arrests top Muslim leader over 2019 Easter attacks: ‘Rishad Bathiudeen is a former Cabinet minister who currently leads an opposition party in Sri Lanka’s Parliament. He and his brother, Reyaj Bathiudeen, were arrested in the capital for allegedly “aiding and abetting the suicide bombers who committed the Easter Sunday carnage,” said police spokesman Ajith Rohana. He said the brothers have not yet been officially charged but were arrested based on direct evidence, as well as what he called circumstantial and “scientific” evidence’

Before his arrest Saturday, Bathiudeen wrote on Facebook that police were outside his house “since 1:30 a.m. today attempting to arrest me without a charge. … They have already arrested my brother. I have been in Parliament, and have cooperated with all lawful authorities until now. This is unjust.”

Rushdhie Habeeb, a lawyer representing Bathiudeen, called the arrests politically motivated and said, “No reasons for the arrest had been given at the time of their arrest by those who conducted the midnight raid.”

In his statement, Habeeb said the purpose was to “punish the political leadership of the Muslims, which had nothing to do with 21/4, for the dastardly acts of some Muslim youths who were widely alleged as having been used as pawns by foreign powers.”

The arrests came amid growing demands for justice by Sri Lanka’s Catholic leaders and community, including during a commemoration held Wednesday on the second anniversary of the attacks. Last month, Sri Lankan Catholics also attended Mass dressed in black and held placards in a silent “Black Sunday” protest.

Most of the people connected to the groups accused of carrying out the attacks have been arrested, but Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith has insisted the bombings couldn’t have been planned by the leader who committed suicide in one of the attacks.

The government of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who came to power later in 2019 after promising to determine the truth behind the attacks, is under pressure to find the mastermind.

His government accused an Islamic cleric arrested soon after the attacks of being the organizer, but the claim has not been accepted by the Catholic Church, which suspects there was larger foreign involvement.

Ranjith, the archbishop, has said a presidential commission that investigated the attacks focused on failures by those in political power at the time to prevent the bombings, instead of on finding the people who were directly responsible.

A power struggle between the then-president and prime minister, which led to a communications breakdown and a resulting lapse in security coordination, is said to have enabled the attacks, which occurred despite prior foreign intelligence warnings.

(USA) Digital Currency Report: Facebook plans to launch a ‘Stable Coin’ to compete with U.S dollar & Morgan Stanley warns of China’s central bank currency next year #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Apr.21: A couple of days ago, Morgan Stanley warned that China’s new digital renminbi – the first “central bank digital currency” (or CBDC) –could cement its status as the next reserve currency:

Facebook Plans To Launch Stablecoin That Will Compete With Dollar Early Next Year: Morgan Stanley warned China new digital currency could arrive next year ….

Morgan Stanley: If A CBDC Gains Acceptance For International Transactions, It Could Become The New Reserve Currency

By Chetan Ahya, Morgan Stanley’s Chief Economist and Global Head of Economics

Central Bank Digital Currencies – The Next Disruption: We do not usually associate disruption with central banks. But a major move to introduce central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) could actually disrupt the financial system:

CBDCs are a new form of digital cash intended to serve as a substitute for physical cash. They will be a liability of the central bank, which will maintain them in a centralized ledger. CBDCs should not be confused with cryptocurrencies, which either are pegged to an underlying asset or backed by a public blockchain. Cryptocurrencies are not a viable form of digital cash for payments on a large scale, given the high computational and energy intensity of the validation process using distributed ledger technologies. However, they will continue to perform other functions. For instance, investors may perceive that cryptocurrencies can be a store of value (akin to precious metals) to hedge against the effects of central banks’ aggressive monetary easing.

Efforts to introduce CBDCs are gaining momentum, with as many as 86% of the world’s central banks exploring digital currencies. China has launched pilot trials in a number of cities, the ECB recently concluded a public consultation on a digital euro and will make a decision this summer, and the Boston Fed is set to release its initial research in the fall.

What explains this sudden concerted interest? We see three main reasons:

  1. Monetary sovereignty: Private payment networks have proliferated rapidly. As they gain market share, these networks can become the primary means of transaction for many users. The central banks’ concern is that money will circulate almost exclusively within the networks, posing a threat to central bank control of the monetary system.
  2. Financial stability: Any potential failure by a private provider of digital money could disrupt the payment system and lead to financial stability risks. While regulators have taken steps to mitigate these risks, they cannot eliminate them. In contrast, the central bank both creates and holds a CBDC, hence will be able to guarantee its reliability as a medium of exchange for transactions.
  3. Financial inclusion: The rise of private, narrow money networks risks excluding segments of the general public, e.g., the unbanked population. A CBDC, just like physical cash, can be made broadly available and may even foster greater financial inclusion.

With these objectives in mind, we think that central banks will implement consumer-facing retail digital currencies, accessible to the public through financial intermediaries and running on a centralized ledger system controlled by monetary authorities.

Nevertheless, when something as fundamental as what you use to make payments changes, the effects can be far-reaching.

Commercial banks will face the risk of disintermediation. Once CBDC accounts are launched, consumers will be able to transfer their bank deposits there, subject to limits imposed by the central banks. Moreover, the technological infrastructure of CBDCs will make it easier for new non-bank entities to enter the payments space and accelerate the transition towards digital payments. These factors will increase competitive pressures on commercial banks.

In a digital economy, data provide a competitive edge. We see a tug-of-war playing out between consumers who are privacy-conscious and want to keep their transactions anonymous and fintech companies that will innovate and incentivize consumers to get onto their platforms in order to acquire transaction data. If the fintechs’ efforts succeed, network effects could proliferate, allowing fintechs to take market share from banks.

CBDCs also have the potential to disrupt the international payments system. If a country’s CBDC gains acceptance for international transactions, significant advantages could accrue to the issuer country in financing costs and control over financial transactions, similar to the US dollar’s privileged role today. Some central banks like the ECB and the PBOC see the move towards digital currency as an opportunity to raise the international status of their currencies and increase their use in cross-border payments. On the other hand, emerging markets want to limit the use of foreign digital currencies in their economies (e-dollarization).

Innovations are typically viewed with caution and their disruptive potential is usually underestimated. While central banks’ CBDC initiatives are not intended to disrupt the banking system, they will likely have unintended disruptive consequences. The pace of disruption will hinge on how quickly network effects take hold in a CBDC system. The more widely digital currencies are accepted, the more opportunity for innovation and the greater the scope for disruption to the financial system.

Over the past years, the US tech giant has recurrently been opting for such measures against Iranian media outlets. It has taken on Press TV more than any other Iranian outlet given the expanse of its viewership and readership.

The measure comes hot on the heels of another hostile move and aggression on the Iranian media outlets, with Facebook shutting down the page of Press TV news network.

The US-based social media giant informed Press TV on Friday that its account had been shut down for what it claimed to be the Iranian news channel’s failure to “follow our Community Standards.” The page was reinstated a few days later.

' Social Media War Machine Has Part to Play in Winning Hearts and Minds '

#AceWorldNewsGAZA CITY – July 26 – As part of Israel’s PR efforts during operation Cast Lead (2009), the IDF has established a Youtube channel to tell Israel’s side. As seen on Arutz Sheva. and supplied by israelnationalnews.com at the time it purported to have 7,000 followers and today as the screenshot shows it is down to 1,981.

Five years later, the involvement of the army in the documentation and dissemination of propaganda has increased, through YouTube videos and official accounts on Facebook and Twitter, which show a constant flow of messages.

Screenshot from 2014-07-26 14:31:51

Screenshot from 2014-07-26 14:31:51

Today’s media strategy includes dozens of infographics and visualizations that attempt to depict Israel’s rationale in a graphic and simple manner similar to that employed by the award-winning Visualizing Palestine project, which focused on visualizing the effects of occupation for Palestinians in Gaza.

One of the most viral visualizations shows how a house in Gaza becomes a target. “When is a house a home and when does it become a military target?”, the image reads, in response to accusations that Israel indiscriminately bombs houses in Gaza.

Another one compares “what Israel does to protect civilians” vs. “what Hamas does to endanger its civilians.”

An online struggle for “hearts and minds”

Israeli military operations are always accompanied by robust media reports that seem intended to mitigate their impact on international public opinion. From the sensorial “Cast Lead” in 2009 to the self-explanatory “Protective Edge” in 2014, several fronts of “hasbara” (pro-Israeli propaganda, in Hebrew) have been developed to show the world Israel’s rationale.

In 2008, just before attacks on Gaza began, the Israeli administration decided to replace traditional press conferences of war time with a wide array of initiatives based on social media. Guidelines for the campaign were developed by former army officer Yarden Vatikai, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Jewish Agency.

One of the initiatives consisted of teaching new media workshops to army officers in the Herzliya Interdisciplinary Center.

“In terms of communicating our message, the future is in new media”, Defense Forces spokesman Avi Benayahu said in February 2009. “The IDF has moved online to win hearts and minds.”

‘ USS Release Un-Verified Tape of Intercepted Phone Calls of Malaysian Airlines Being Shot-Down By Mistake ‘

#AceWorldNews – UKRAINE – July 19 – The Ukrainian Security Service has released what it calls “intercepted phone conversations,” which are supposed to prove that Donetsk self-defense forces shot down Malaysia Airlines MH17 flight on Thursday – presumably, by mistake.

The 2:33 minute clip, which Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) posted on YouTube in Ukrainian, English, German, French, Spanish, Polish, Turkish and Japanese versions, consists of three separate “conversations.”

The first “conversation” allegedly takes place between – according to SBU’s titles – militia group commander nicknamed Bes (“Igor Bezler”) and his alleged coordinator, “Vasily Geranin,” who is titled in the video as “a colonel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.”

“Bes” and “Geranin” are speaking about a downing of a jet, without clarifying if it’s a military or a civilian aircraft.

The second “conversation,” which allegedly happens between anti-Kiev militia members – nicknamed “Major” and “Grek” – reveals that the crashed plane was“a 100 per cent passenger aircraft.”

The third and final segment sets things straight as an unnamed “militia member” tells an alleged Cossack commander” titled as “Nikolay Kozitsin,” that there’s ‘Malaysia Airlines’ marking on the downed plane.

#AceBreakingNews UKRAINE One civilian was killed and several…

#AceBreakingNews – UKRAINE – One civilian was killed and several others wounded in eastern Ukraine as the National Guard started shooting at protesters and voters, who had gathered around a seized polling station in Krasnoarmeysk, self-defence forces and witnesses said.

The National Guard entered the city in the Donetsk region earlier on Sunday and occupied several polling stations, the city council building among them. First reports on shooting appeared on Twitter.

I just saw the National Guard kill one and injure several others,” Russian journalist Ilya Azar wrote in his micro-blog. Later this was confirmed by Denis Pushilin, the co-chairman of the self-proclaimed People’s Donetsk Republic.

Azar also posted a photo of the dead young man. He says at least one more person was injured in the chest. Other unconfirmed reports on Twitter say at least three others sustained wounds.

An amateur video posted on YouTube shows several National Guard mercenaries blocking the entry to the city council headquarters used as a polling station, and firing at locals.

People were just standing there, unarmed, outside the city council seized by the Guard,” Azar tweeted.

Krasnoarmeysk, together with many other places in southeastern Ukraine, has conducted an autonomy referendum. Following the National Guard’s interference, the voting was stopped. Four schools got seized by masked men; all the people had to be evacuated.

“They threatened us and said that they were sent by the Kiev authorities,”Sergey, a local resident, told RT.

By that time, over 47,000 people had cast their ballots, self-defense forces said.

` Senate Committee in Pakistan has Unanimously Agreed to a Resolution to Restore YouTube in Pakistan ‘

#AceWorldNews – ISLAMABAD – April 21 – The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights (HRC) in Pakistan has unanimously passed a resolution to restore YouTube in Pakistan here on Monday.

The resolution said that there was no excuse for the government to maintain its ban on YouTube as the blasphemy content still available on other social websites.

The HRC has quoted Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) regarding the issued that the PTA also demanded to remove ban on video sharing website.

The HRC further added that the issued will be raised today in the ongoing session of upper house (Senate).
The video-sharing website has been blocked in Pakistan since September 2012 over its failure to take down the “Innocence of Muslims” movie that sparked furious protests around the world.

Religion in Pakistan, where 97 per cent of the population are Muslims, is a very sensitive topic and perceived insults to the faith can spark violent reactions.

In November 2011 the telecommunications authority tried to ban early 1,700 “obscene” words from text messages, which included innocuous terms such as “lotion”, “athlete’s foot” and “idiot”.

` Ankara Court over turns ` YouTube ` Ban but allows blockage of 15 Specific Videos ‘

#AceBreakingNews – ANKARA – April – Ankara court ordered a Turkish government ban on YouTube to be lifted, but allowed the blockage of 15 specific videos to remain in place.

The move comes after a similar overturning of a government ban of Twitter.

The court in the capital Ankara said the YouTube ban was too broad and instead specifically blocked access to 15 videos, a copy of the court document showed, as Reuters reports.

Unlike the decision on Twitter, the ruling on YouTube was not taken by Turkey’s constitutional court and may be overruled by a court of higher jurisdiction.

This means that in practice the video hosting service will remain blocked for now, pending a likely government appeal. RT

` Telecommunications Directorate has blocked access to ` YouTube ‘ after leak of Information Gaffe’

#AceWorldNews – TURKEY – March 27 – The Telecommunications Directorate has blocked access to popular video sharing platform YouTube.

This was just hours after a leaked voice recording in which Turkey’s foreign minister, intelligence chief and a top army general are heard discussing the developments in neighbouring war-torn Syria, uploaded onto YouTube on Thursday.

In the voice recording Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, National Intelligence Organization (MİT) Undersecretary Hakan Fidan, Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu and Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen. Yaşar Güler are heard discussing possible intervention into Syria and possible reactions from the world.

Turkey : ` Google declines to remove `YouTube ‘ videos that allege Corruption ‘

#AceWorldNews – Google has declined Turkey’s requests to remove YouTube videos that allege government corruption, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

Amid a corruption scandal, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government has asked Google in recent weeks to block certain videos from its site in Turkey.

However, Google has reportedly refused to comply given it believes the requests are legally invalid. Turkey blocked the social media site Twitter on Thursday, and the government has threatened to do the same with YouTube and Facebook, as the sites have been prime conduits for corruption allegations.

Safe Internet for Children called into Arena by Psychologists and Psychiatrists as Google Develops own Kids Version ‘

#AceSecurityNews – The Safe Internet League, Russia’s largest and most reputable organization fighting dangerous web content, considers it necessary to attract highly skilled psychologists and psychiatrists as the popular Google-owned video hosting and sharing service YouTube is developing a special version for kids, Safe Internet League CEO Denis Davydov was quoted as saying by the organization’s press service on Thursday.

“Leading psychologists and psychiatrists should participate in developing requirements for video content hosted on the so-called child-friendly version of YouTube in order to eliminate the risk of ‘a wolf in sheep’s clothing’,” Davydov said. “Far from all videos that may seem harmless to us are necessarily suitable for children. And specialists’ opinion is essential in this regard.”

Davydov said the Safe Internet League hailed Google’s decision to create a version of its video site aimed specifically at children aged ten and under.

As envisioned by project developers, the site would only show videos deemed safe for this age group, and parents will control access to it. The site would also filter out comments that contain explicit language, or other references to adult content.

“It is very laudable that Google has started demonstrating its willingness to work in Russia, showing respect for the rights of our citizens and taking care of the younger generation of Russians,” Davydov said.

Last September, the Safe Internet League published the results of a full-scale investigation by the League into Google’s activities in Russia. The organization accused Google of “ignoring Russian legal requirements” and “deliberately trying to influence Russian domestic policy in order to promote its services among Russian citizens and officials, in order to undermine digital sovereignty”.

According to reports, YouTube has already approached video producers asking to create suitable content and videos, and it is thought this content would be available exclusively on the site.

The Safe Internet League is a non-commercial organization launched by several major internet providers and a Christian charity.

The declared aim of the group is ridding the Internet of dangerous content through self-regulation in order to prevent government censorship.

` Innocence of Muslims Video on anti-Islamic issues has been demanded back by Google ‘

#AceWorldNews says that Google has urged a US appeals court to return an anti-Islamic video to YouTube, arguing that its removal damaged the website’s constitutional rights.

The video, “Innocence of the Muslims,” surfaced in 2012 and provoked a wave of indignation and deadly violence in Muslim countries.

The film was initially removed at the behest of one of the actresses in the film, who filed a lawsuit claiming she was tricked into appearing and was unaware of its anti-Muslim slant.

She has since received death threats.

` Erdogan accuses `Political Enemies’ of fabricating an `Audiotape’ of his son disposing of large sums of money’

#AceWorldNews says Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused political enemies of fabricating an audiotape of him telling his son to dispose of large sums of money.

After the 11-minute tape emerged on YouTube, Erdogan said his political enemies had penetrated encrypted state communications, referring to a network run by former ally, Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen, Reuters reported.

“The people don’t believe these lies,” Erdogan told the parliament. Opinion polls taken earlier show Erdogan’s popularity was little affected by the corruption scandal which broke on December 17 after the detention of businessmen close to him and three ministers’ sons.

#GCHQ `Taught’ #NSA : How to `Monitor’ our `Social Media Sites’ in Real-Time”

#AceSecurityNews says `GCHQ‘ taught `NSA’how to monitor Facebook, Twitter in real-time #Snowden leak

British intelligence officials can infiltrate the very cables that transfer information across the internet,British intelligence officials can infiltrate the very cables that transfer information across the internet, as well as monitor users in real-time on sites like Facebook without the company’s consent, according to documents leaked by Edward Snowden.

The internal documents reveal that British analysts gave instruction to members of the National Security Agency in 2012, showing them how to spy on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube in real-time and collect the computer addresses of billions of the sites’ up-loaders.

The leaked documents are from a #GCHQ publication titled ‘Psychology: A New Kind of SIGDEV’ (Signals Development). Published by NBC News on Monday, the papers detail a program dubbed ‘Squeaky Dolphin,’ which was developed for analysts working in “broad real-time monitoring of online activity.”

Sources told NBC that the British have proven their ability to both directly monitor the world’s web traffic cable and use a third-party to view the data stream and extract information from it.

Representatives from the companies in question said they have not provided any data to the government of the United Kingdom under this program, either voluntarily or involuntarily. One person who wished to remain anonymous said that Google, the company that owns YouTube, was “shocked” to discover the UK may have been “grabbing” data for years.

Previously published disclosures have made it clear that the US and UK are sharing intelligence tactics. The Washington Post reported in October 2013 that the #NSA and #GCHQ collaborated on a program known as MUSCULAR, which the agencies used to record “entire data flows” from Yahoo and Google.

Security officials have consistently maintained that the programs are authorized under the laws of their respective nation and that the surveillance is designed only as a tool for preventing terrorism. Still, the lack of transparency has left civil liberties advocates searching for more answers.

Governments have no business knowing which YouTube videos everyone in the world is watching,Chris Soghoian, chief technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union, told NBC. “It’s one thing to spy on a particular person who has done something to warrant a government investigation but governments have no business monitoring the Facebook likes or YouTube views of hundreds of millions of people.”

When members of GCHQ delivered the presentation to NSA officials, they showed the Americans how to carry out the surveillance by extracting information from YouTube, Facebook, and Google’s Blogger service on February 13, 2012 – one day before anti-government protests were to begin in Bahrain.

According to the documents leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden, the presenters were careful to mention that the intelligence gathering was not designed to monitor specific targets. “Not interested in individuals just broad trends!” one note reads.

Jason Healey, a former White House official under President George W. Bush, told NBC such activity not only sends a shiver through the public but has also become an impediment for Silicon Valley executives and the thriving social media industry.

We want our security services to be out there and keeping us safe,” he said, “but we can also look for balance, we can look for limits, especially if we’re putting at risk this most transformative technology since Gutenberg.”

#AceGuestNews & Views: ” The Year Ahead – Beautiful Content Everywhere, Feeling the Love”

#AceNewsServices says l have a number of people that send me posts all year round and would like me to post their Guest Views some l have found not to our news groups ethos, but occasionally someone has thought it through and their views are worthy of print. These are their view’s and l thank them for their input.

Their Thoughts and Feelings about 2013 and 2014:

More than anything 2014 is going to be a year of beauty, acceptance, and becoming more comfortable with the fact that we’re not alone. even in our own thoughts.

In 2013 we saw:

  1.  The demise (more of a lowering of expectations) of 3D and movement to the next era of insanely brilliant moving image brilliance with 4K content and growing possibilities
  2. The death (realignment) of the PC, rise of everything mobile, constant connection
  3. The stimulated deterioration of long-term thinking being replaced by ultra short-term images/messages that are replaced in a nanosecond by newer/funer images/messages
  4. Business pressures demanding a more rapidly deployed and flexible infrastructure that could respond/react in minutes/hours rather than days/weeks economically. The Cloud
  5. The “horror” to discover that even our most innocuous utterances, activities were being followed by someone, somewhere but not enough to skip a beat or a keystroke

The list at first blush may look like a very pessimistic view of our “progress” but actually the last two years have been a major seismic shift – forward – in becoming increasingly more comfortable with the speed of technology change/adoption. And it’s only getting better…faster.

In 2014 we’ll see:

  1.  4K content production, delivery, enjoyment will increase more rapidly than many expect not just because people will buy UHD TV sets more quickly than anticipated but because more 4K content – new and old – will be appreciated and we’ll see a demand force the move more quickly than we did with  the shift from SD to HD. The change will also have a positive/negative effect on what we watch, when we watch it, where we watch it. OTT (over the top) quality streaming will enable more viewing options forcing the change of cable/satellite firms to become service providers, not gate keepers.

  1. First appearing in 1977 the PC has had a good run and is being rapidly augmented – not replaced – by new tablets and smartphones. It’s estimated that more than a half billion of the desktop/notebook systems are in use today and the technology is on track to keep them fresh and relevant. The challenge (opportunity) for the industry is to offer a range of screen sizes for tablets and smartphones so they meet the uses of each consumer not broad theoretical “groups.” The 9-12 inch tablet will establish itself as the entertainment/work device of choice by Gen X, Gen Yers while the 3-7 inch phone/phablet will become the communications/entertainment device of choice for Gen Cers
  • The instant-on acceptance of TVs and appliances has raised the expectations of people in almost everything they see, hear, do. It is difficult to “find the time” to sit through something as exciting and breathtaking as Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity without the addition of show Tweets and 3-minute YouTube views of outtakes and goofs. Fortunately the human computer – the mind – is upgrading itself to make multitasking easier to manage, control, live with…I hope

    1. The Cloud will experience a lot of upheaval in 2014 that will also have a mixed effect on the computer hardware/software industry. The industry will experience a lot of change this year as startups will be squeezed out or acquired by others and the herd will be thinned to the point where the dominant players will be Amazon, IBM, Google, Microsoft. This consolidation of horrendously big data centers will also place a lot of pressure on hardware producers like Dell and HP as well as software providers such as Oracle, SAP and VMware which will have a much smaller prospective customer base. The saving grace for these organizations will be the growing SMB (small to medium business) segment which is growing very nicely
  • While we all “knew” that businesses were spying on each other and tracking customer activities on the Internet and we “knew” governments were spying on each other, 2013 marked the turning point where we now “really knew” it. While we will continue to give lip service to transparency, the security industry will enjoy solid – but futile – growth in every area – consumer, business, public organizations. Globally governments, businesses, individuals will use all the tools they can develop/find to keep their friends close and their enemies even closer. The black hats/white hats will finally become grey hats

    Conclusion:

    • Lower cost video capture solutions like Black Magic’s 4K $400 and $4,000 cameras combined with high-performance, low-cost video post production systems will reduce overall content production costs so studios, indies and businesses will deliver more eye-popping content more quickly
    • Standards organizations like SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) are already developing more efficient solutions for delivering (streaming) content rather than forcing native 4K content delivery. Rather than relying on pushing  more pixels through the already cramped pipe they will focus on more delivering higher frame rates, better bit rates and a broader color gamut more effectively with lower bandwidth requirements
    • While producing new 4K content is an expensive/time-consuming process, studios, content owners and firms like 4K Studios are finding they can mine their libraries of content, economically re-purpose/represent old movies/shows and find an eager market for the material
    • UHD TV set manufacturers are “stimulating” people to replace their “old” HD sets more quickly and are working directly with content owners to deliver material now rather than waiting for the cable gatekeepers to negotiate distribution
    • The perfect storm of new Xbox and PS4, growing array of versatile media players like Roku, Nuvola, NetFlix, Hulu and UltraFlix are giving consumers just the content they want – mixture of free/paid – helping legacy TV services to become less relevant
    • Today there are a half billion PCs in use and the sales growth has obviously slowed as mobile devices – tablets/smartphones – take more of the consumer’s budget. Still only about 230M + tablets will be sold this next year and more than 500M smartphones. Three players will continue to dominate the tablet market – Apple, Samsung, Amazon – and two will dominate the smart phone market – Apple and Samsung. The big struggle here will be in the OS arena – Android, iOS and Windows.  To be more in control of its own destiny you can expect to see Samsung move more of its mobile devices from Android to Baba in a slow, cautious fashion
    • Face it there are just too many cloud service companies in the pool and 25 percent of them will disappear this coming year either through acquisition or bankruptcy. The economy of scale plays too big of a roll for second tier service providers to make the heavy investment in infrastructure
    • Because C office folks see huge savings by buying into the cloud it also means less IT investment – servers, storage, software – which could reduce global IT spending to single-digit growth. It will also require a major focus shift from enterprise to SMB sales
    • I’m not quite certain why Snowdon’s “revelations” of the foul activities of the #NSA (National Security Agency) gets so much attention but it has certainly stimulated the security industry. People have put, gathering, grabbing big data on the Internet for years. Look in the mirror…you are big data. And there’s money to be made, things to be found in your data. It’s what people gave freely to get free stuff! It’s the financial motivation to mine that data that fuels Facebook’s/Google’s growth. It is just too tempting for governments, organizations not to tap into. It’s not that people didn’t know that spies, espionage, surveillance didn’t know it…it’s on the news and the storyline of every movie, TV show. Everyone is suddenly outraged even though he/she wants to know what the other is thinking/doing while protecting their thoughts/ideas/actions. Covering up my stuff while finding out dirt about the other guy is a big business, getting bigger. Just know everyone !

p style=”text-align:center;”>Is cheating, spying except you and me and…I’m not too sure about you.
