(LIVERPOOL. U.K.) Court Report: The Liverpool bomber died from an explosion and fire caused by a device he manufactured with “murderous intent”, a coroner has ruled #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Dec.31: Senior coroner Andre Rebello said it was unclear whether he intended the device to detonate when it did: The inquest heard Al Swealmeen rang his brother two days before he died and suggested he might do “something bad”

#AceDailyNews says according to BBC England News Report: Liverpool bomber made device with murderous intent, coroner says after Emad Al Swealmeen was killed when his bomb went off while he was inside a taxi at Liverpool Women’s Hospital.

Iraqi-born Al Swealmeen, 32, was a passenger in the taxi when the bomb went off at 10:59 GMT on 14 November.

The driver, David Perry, was taken to hospital but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Recording a narrative conclusion at Liverpool and Wirral Coroner’s Court, Mr Rebello said Al Swealmeen made the bomb at a flat he had rented in Rutland Avenue, near Sefton Park in Liverpool.

“It is found he manufactured the improvised explosive device, designed to project shrapnel, with murderous intent,” he added.

Emad Al Swealmeen was the passenger in a taxi which was destroyed by his bomb

The inquest heard Al Swealmeen was a resident at premises provided by the Home Office in Sutcliffe Street, in the Kensington area of Liverpool.

But since April he had rented a self-contained flat in Rutland Avenue where he paid the rent monthly in cash.

Det Ch Insp Andrew Meeks, the senior investigating officer in the case, said it was accurate to describe the flat as a “bomb-making factory”.

He said there was no evidence to suggest anyone else had been involved with the procurement of materials, including 2,000 ball bearings, or construction of the device but investigations were continuing.

The inquest heard the explosion on Remembrance Sunday propelled ball bearings forward into the taxi to the extent the front windscreen was forced out and travelled 52ft (16m), where it hit a tree.

There was also damage to some of the windows of the hospital, the hearing was told.

Al Swealmeen was identified by records held on a police system, and a forensic pathologist found the cause of death was the effects of an explosion with fire.

David Perry, pictured with his wife Rachel, was injured in the blast

The inquest heard that when Al Swealmeen got in a rear passenger seat in the taxi the only words he spoke were “women’s hospital”.

Taxi driver Mr Perry stopped outside the front entrance, where he was thrown forwards by the blast and blacked out for a couple of seconds.

“As his car came to a stop he didn’t notice anything unusual, no warning, no movement from the passenger, just the blast,” Mr Rebello said.

“He described the journey as non-eventful, saying if the bomb hadn’t gone off he wouldn’t have remembered anything about the journey.”

The coroner said when Mr Perry regained consciousness he felt burning to his back and managed to stagger out of the car.

“He could see smoke and smell burning plastic and the smell of burning body and thought ‘I’m dead if I don’t get out’,” Mr Rebello added.

Mr Perry suffered three fractures to the bottom of his back and damage to his eardrums.

“I suppose he is probably one of the unluckiest taxi drivers around and yet possibly one of the luckiest given what could have been,” Mr Rebello said.

The taxi was removed from outside the hospital several days after the blast

The inquest heard Al Swealmeen rang his brother, who lives in America, on 12 November – two days before the blast.

Mr Rebello said: “He says towards the end of call Emad said something like ‘if I do something bad that will affect the family what do you think?’

“He replied something like ‘don’t do [anything]’, advising him as an older brother, although this was something which caused him concern, knowing his previous issues.”

Al Swealmeen had been in prison in the Middle East for a serious assault on another person, as well as being in trouble in Liverpool previously for possession of an offensive weapon, the inquest heard.

He had also been assessed under the Mental Health Act in a five-month period in 2015 and in August was prescribed medication for low mood by his GP, the hearing was told.

Det Ch Insp Meeks confirmed Al Swealmeen was not on the radar of security services.

Mr Rebello said: “One thing that struck me was this lone actor from a disrupted family, with a bit of a chaotic background, could well have killed many, many innocent people and there doesn’t appear to have been any opportunity to have detected this was about to happen.”

Emad Al Swealmeen (on right in light grey jacket) during a service at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, alongside the bishop Right Reverend Cyril Ashton

Al Swealmeen came to the country legally in May 2014 with a Jordanian passport and UK visa, the inquest heard.

Mr Rebello said: “Shortly after his arrival he claimed, it is believed falsely, that he was of Syrian heritage and claimed asylum as a refugee from that country.”

He said that claim and all subsequent claims for asylum were refused, with the latest refusal in November 2020.

Mr Rebello said there had been reports Al Swealmeen had rejected Islam and converted to Christianity.

Det Ch Insp Meeks agreed with the coroner that he might have converted to strengthen his asylum claim.

The inquest heard a Koran and prayer mat were found when police searched his premises.

Mr Rebello said: “It was fairly evident that he carried out the religious duties of someone who is a follower of Islam, not withstanding the reported conversion to Christianity.”

(HAITI) LATEST: A truck carrying gasoline exploded in the north killing around 40 people and injuring dozens of others in the latest disaster to hit a country whose troubles deepened greatly this year #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Dec.19: A truck carrying gasoline exploded in northern Haiti, killing around 40 people and injuring dozens of others in the latest disaster to hit a country whose troubles deepened greatly this year.

#AceDailyNews says according to a local media news report Haiti fuel truck explosion killed around 40 people as the country reels from crisis after crisis….

Key points:

  • The Prime Minister has declared three days of national mourning
  • Haiti is currently grappling with a severe fuel shortage that recently prompted a shutdown of schools and businesses
  • This year, Haiti has weathered a devastating earthquake, a presidential assassination and a spike in gang-related kidnappings

The blast occurred late on Tuesday in the city of Cap-Haitien, Prime Minister Ariel Henry said, adding that he was devastated.

“Three days of national mourning will be decreed throughout the territory, in memory of the victims of this tragedy that the entire Haitian nation is grieving,” Mr Henry tweeted.

As dozens of bodies lay near the explosion site, people in the area used buckets to scoop up gasoline from the truck and the street to take back to their homes, Dave Larose, a civil engineer who works in Cap-Haitien, told The Associated Press.

People stand at the site of the explosion in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, December 14, 2021.
The blast occurred late on Tuesday, with the Prime Minister saying the area was devastated.(Reuters: Reuters TV)

The explosion occurred as Haiti struggles with a severe shortage of fuel and skyrocketing gas prices that recently forced hospitals to turn away patients, temporarily shut down schools and businesses and prompted the government of US and Canada to urge its citizens to leave while they still could.

“It’s terrible what our country has to go through,” Mr Larose said.

Haiti is still trying to recover from the July 7 presidential assassination and a magnitude-7.2 earthquake that struck in mid-August, killing more than 2,200 people and destroying tens of thousands of homes.

The country of more than 11 million people also has been hit by a spike in gang-related kidnappings, including 17 missionaries with a US religious organisation who were abducted in mid-October. Five of them have been released but another 12 are still being held…….US missionaries kidnapped in HaitiKidnappers in Haiti are getting bolder as gang violence surges after a lull that followed the president’s assassination in July.

Now, Haitians find themselves mourning the victims of the explosion, which officials believe occurred after the gas truck overturned after apparently trying to avoid hitting a motorcycle, Patrick Almonor, deputy mayor of Cap-Haitien, told The Associated Press.

He said at least 53 deaths and more than 100 injured have been reported following the explosion that burned around 20 homes near the site.

He said he expects the number of deaths to keep rising because people who died in their homes have not yet been counted.

“It’s horrible what happened. We lost so many lives,” Mr Almonor said.

He said a local hospital is in dire need of more nurses, doctors and basic medical supplies to help those injured.

Haiti’s prime minister said his administration was deploying field hospitals to the area to help those affected.

Former Prime Minister Claude Joseph also mourned the victims, tweeting, “I share the pain and sorrow of all the people.”

(LIVERPOOL, U.K) LATEST: Women’s Hospital Attack Report: An explosion on Remembrance Sunday has been declared a terror incident by police #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.16: Home Secretary Priti Patel said it had been raised from substantial to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely, because the explosion in Liverpool was the second incident in a month.

#AceDailyNews Liverpool Women’s Attack UPDATE Report: A taxi exploded and was engulfed in flames just before 11:00 GMT at a drop-off zone near the entrance, killing the passenger and injuring the driver: The cabbie, named locally as David Perry, was declared a hero by Liverpool Mayor Joanne Anderson for locking the suspect inside the vehicle: Four men have been arrested in the city under the Terrorism Act…

As it happened: Police updates on the hospital blast

By Lynette Horsburgh
BBC News

The UK terror threat level has been raised to severe.

Head of Counter Terrorism Policing North West, Russ Jackson, said the taxi passenger appeared to have made an “improvised explosive device” which caused the blast.

He said police knew the identity of the attacker but would not confirm it at this stage.

The man’s motivation was “yet to be understood”, Assistant Chief Constable Jackson added.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired an emergency Cobra meeting earlier in response to the explosion which the home secretary attended.

Taxi driver David Perry has been released from hospital

Mr Jackson said he understood Delta Taxis driver Mr Perry picked up a passenger in Rutland Avenue, near Sefton Park, on Sunday.

“The fare – a man – had asked to be taken to Liverpool Women’s Hospital, which was about 10 minutes away,” he added.

“As the taxi approached the drop-off point at the hospital an explosion occurred from within the car. This quickly engulfed it in flames.

“Remarkably the taxi driver escaped from the cab.”

Mr Jackson said the taxi driver had been released from hospital after being treated for his injuries.

He said police were “aware there were Remembrance events just a short distance away from the hospital and that the ignition occurred shortly before 11am”.

“We cannot at this time draw any connection with this but it is a line of inquiry we are pursuing,” he added.

Watch: Police say passenger brought explosive device into taxi

Police said a fourth man, aged 20, was arrested earlier in the Kensington area of the city and was in custody.

Three other men – aged 21, 26 and 29 – were detained on Sunday in Sutcliffe Street in Kensington.

Mr Jackson said the arrested men were believed to be “associates” of the taxi passenger.

He said officers were looking at the man’s associates, his telephone records and purchases he may have made.

All four men in custody will be interviewed later by counter-terrorism detectives.

Officers are searching two addresses – one in Sutcliffe Street and a second at Rutland Avenue where “significant items” have been found, police said.

A cordon is in place at both locations and eight families have been evacuated from their homes.

Mr Jackson said police had “attributed” the taxi passenger to both the addresses but were uncertain which one he lived at.

Neighbour Sharon Cullen said she was evacuated from her home near Sutcliffe Street by officers telling her “whatever is going on at the back of the house, it could blow the block”.

She said she thought four men aged in their 20s lived at the address.

“I don’t know any of them but one [of] them always seemed to be on a PC in his bedroom,” she said.

People are being allowed in and out of Liverpool Women’s Hospital but officers could be seen at the entrance to the building and were stopping cars for checks as they entered the car park.

Patients have been told to attend appointments as normal but visiting arrangements have been restricted until further notice, a hospital spokesman said.

(MEXICO CITY) LATEST: Early morning explosions, apparently caused by an illegal tap on a gas line, shook the central city of Puebla on Sunday, killing at least one person, injuring 11 and damaging dozens of homes #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Nov.02: Puebla Governor Miguel Barbosa said an emergency call warning of a gas smell and cloud in the area gave officials about 80 minutes to evacuate some 2,000 people living as far as a kilometre from the leak before the first of three explosions, which came shortly before 3am.

#AceDailyNews says according to an Associated Press Report: Mexican city of Puebla was rocked by explosions that are believed to be caused by illegal tap on pipeline, if there had not been an evacuation and there had not been coordination, there would have been a tragedy of great proportions,” the governor said.

Officials said at least 54 homes were destroyed or damaged in the San Pablo Xochimehuacan district of Puebla, a city of 1.7 million people. At least two of the injured were in critical condition.

Officials also briefly evacuated 37 patients from a nearby hospital, but it was back in service hours later after suffering only minor damage, such as broken windows.

The governor said rescue teams with dogs were searching for more possible victims, though there were no reports of missing people.

Javier González of the government’s Petróleos Mexicanos company said the tap apparently was installed on a property where officials found a tanker truck and 25 gas cylinders. Across the street is a gas distribution company.

Officials said 1,400 soldiers, National Guard troops, police, firefighters and rescue personnel were working in the area following the explosions.

The governor vowed to “get to the bottom” of who was responsible for the explosion.

Authorities warned the toll could have worse if they had not been able to evacuate thousands of people.(AP: Pablo Spencer)

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador offered condolences to victims of the blast. Early in his administration, he crusaded against thieves who tap into gas and fuel lines — even shutting down major fuel ducts to get rid of thieves.

But official reports indicate that as recently as March, Mexico was losing an average of 4,000 barrels a day of gasoline and diesel to such taps, which were sometimes guarded by local communities who saw them as a resource.

An illegal tap of a gasoline line caused an explosion that killed at least 134 people in the town of Tlahuelilpan, north of Mexico City, in 2019.

People had gathered in a field to fill containers with gasoline leaking from the line.

(KABUL) JUST IN: Suicide bomber has attacked the airport killing at least 13-people and three U.S troops #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.26: A suicide bomber has attacked Kabul airport, just hours after officials warned of an ‘imminent’ ISIS bomb threat, killing at least 13 people and injuring at least three US troops.

#AceDailyNews says that the blast was outside The Baron Hotel, at the Abbey Gate of Kabul airport. Westerners were staying in the hotel before their evacuation flights. At least three US troops were injured. It’s unclear if any Americans were killed in the explosion but harrowing scenes show bloodied Afghans being removed from the scene on wheelchairs. One witness reported that a baby was among those killed. The attack came just hours after…

An explosion outside Kabul airport killed at least 13 people, including children, a Taleban official said: https://t.me/TheStraitsTimes/5876

It appeared to be caused by a suicide bomb, and US service members were injured, a US official said, citing an initial report which could change. https://bit.ly/3jlQiIl

The US and the UK warned that Islamic State Khorasan (ISIS-K/IS-K) was planning attacks amid evacuations from Kabul in Afghanistan. Here is what we know about the jihadist group. As its name suggests, the group pledged allegiance to Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and has since been mostly active in Afghanistan’s eastern Khorasan Province. While IS was rapidly gaining ground in Iraq and Syria in 2015, the militants viewed ISIS-K as the caliphate’s sword in future conquests in South and Central Asia.

The group’s first emir and commander was a Pakistani national named Hafiz Saeed Khan. Former Taliban member and Guantanamo detainee Abdul Rauf Aliza was appointed Khan’s deputy. Both Aliza and Khan were killed by US airstrikes in Afghanistan in 2015 and 2016 respectively. ISIS-K’s current leader is Shahab al-Muhajir, who reportedly was a midlevel commander with the Haqqani network, a Taliban-linked Afghan insurgent force.According to the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, ISIS-K carried out nearly 100 attacks on civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan throughout 2017 and 2018 in addition to around 250 clashes with the US, Afghan, and Pakistani security forces.Last year, the group claimed responsibility for attacking the Kabul University compound, as well as firing rockets into the Presidential Palace and Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan’s capital. It was also accused of attacking a Doctors Without Borders maternity ward in Kabul. In January, Afghan security officials said they had arrested several ISIS-K members who plotted to assassinate Ross Wilson, a top US diplomat in Kabul. A UN report published in June said that, after suffering some territorial losses in recent years, ISIS-K has a core group of around 1,500 to 2,200 fighters, which, in turn, has been decentralized into smaller cells. The group maintains communication with Islamic State and has “an active social media presence with a post-United States withdrawal period in mind,” the UN wrote. The Taliban, which overran the majority of Afghanistan and captured Kabul on August 15, has clashed with ISIS-K in the past. Furthermore, media reports claimed that shortly after the fall of the Afghan capital the militants executed Abu Omar Khorasani, the imprisoned former chief of Islamic State in South Asia. Western governments now fear the resurgence of ISIS-K amid the chaos created by the Taliban takeover that occurred simultaneously with the hasty withdrawal of US troops. President Joe Biden warned on Tuesday that the Islamic State-allied group was seeking to target the Kabul airport during the frantic evacuation of foreign nationals and their Afghan helpers. The same concern was voiced by UK Armed Forces Minister James Heappey, who on Thursday advised evacuees against traveling to the airport due to an “imminent” threat from ISIS-K. But the company that operated the bus said the vehicle had a diesel engine and no gas equipment, and insisted it was in good technical condition.

The National Anti-Terrorist Committee said all options were being considered and experts continued to analyze fragments from the bus.

Health authorities in Voronezh, a city of 1 million residents about 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of Moscow, said two people died in a hospital from injuries they sustained in the explosion. Another 15 people remained hospitalized Friday and five were undergoing treatment at home.

(BEIJING) JUST IN: At least 12 people have been killed and 39 seriously injured after a gas line explosion tore through a residential neighbourhood in central China #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.14: The statement said rescue efforts were continuing but gave no word on the cause of the explosion:

CHINA: Responders to the early Sunday morning blast in the Hubei province city of Shiyan sent more than 150 people to hospital, according to a statement on the city’s official social media channel.

Play Video. Duration: 23 seconds
Buildings were reduced to rubble after a gas line explosion ripped through a residential compound in Hubei province.

Stall keepers and customers buying breakfast and fresh vegetables at a food market were the major victims when the explosion hit shortly after 6:00am local time, according to state media reports.

Images showed rescuers climbing over broken concrete slabs to reach those trapped inside.

The blast appeared similar to one that occurred in the north-eastern port of Qingdao in 2013, in which 55 people were killed when underground pipelines ripped open following a leak.

The Shiyan explosion came a day after eight people died and three others were injured when toxic methyl formate leaked from a vehicle at a chemical handling facility in the south-western city of Guiyang.

Frequent deadly accidents are usually traced to weak adherence to safety standards, poor maintenance and corruption among enforcement bodies.

Those responsible are often handed harsh punishments, but high demand and the desire for profits often trump such concerns.

Among the worst accidents was a massive 2015 explosion at a chemical warehouse in the port city of Tianjin that killed 173 people, most of them firefighters and police officers.

The blast was blamed on illegal construction and unsafe storage of volatile materials.

(KABUL, Afghanistan.) JUST IN: At least three teachers have died and 15 more people have been wounded after a roadside bomb hit a bus carrying university staff on Sunday #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.31: Professors and staff from Al-Biruni university were travelling through Charikar, the capital of Parwan province, about 70km (43 miles) north of the capital Kabul:

Afghanistan: ‘Bus blast kills three university staff and has seen increasing violence in recent weeks as the US and Nato prepare to withdraw all troops’ and NO group has claimed responsibility’

An Afghan police officer holding a rifle, May 2021
Afghan security forces are struggling against a rising wave of violence ahead of the US troop withdrawal in September

The deadline for the withdrawal is 11 September – 20 years to the day since the attack on the World Trade Center in New York. In the months which followed, the US and its allies invaded Afghanistan, forcing the Taliban – a hardline Islamist movement – from power and beginning an almost two-decade long war.

Saturday’s blast happened at around 15:15 local time (10:45 GMT), Bagram police reportedly said.

A spokesman for the ministry of higher education said some of the wounded teachers are in a critical condition. The university’s chancellor was also reportedly injured in the attack.

US and Nato officials have recently said that the Taliban has so far failed to live up to commitments to reduce violence in Afghanistan. The group has denied the allegation.

Earlier in May Taliban militants captured a district near Kabul, the second district in a week to fall to the group. The Islamic State group are also active in the country.

Saturday’s attack comes just weeks after blasts close to a secondary school in Kabul killed at least 60 people and injured more than 100.

Students were killed as they left their classrooms. Most of the victims were girls.

On Tuesday Australia announced it was closing its embassy in Afghanistan due to the “increasingly uncertain security environment” in the country. Tens of thousands of Afghan soldiers have been killed and injured. This 2019 video tells their story.

(KABUL, Afghanistan.) JUST IN: At least 50 – people were killed on Saturday in a bomb blast by a school just as the students were leaving the building most of the victims were girls #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – May.09: The explosions took place as students were leaving the building. Most of the victims were girls, officials said: No-one has admitted carrying out the attack in Dasht-e-Barchi – an area often hit by Sunni Islamist militants:

KABUL: Blasts near school leave more than 50 dead: Funerals have begun for victims of a series of blasts near a secondary school on Saturday, now known to have killed more than 50 people’

People bury victims of a series of blasts near a school in Kabul which killed more than 50 people
Families began to bury some of the victims on Sunday

Afghan government officials blamed Taliban militants for the attack, but the group denied any involvement.

Nobel Prize winner and activist Malala Yousafzai – who was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 – posted about the “horrendous attack” on Twitter.

“My heart is with the Kabul school victims’ families,” she wrote.

The exact target for Saturday’s bloodshed is unclear. The blasts come against a backdrop of rising violence as the US looks to withdraw all its troops from Afghanistan by 11 September.

What happened on Saturday?

The explosions are believed to have been caused by a car bomb and two improvised explosive devices planted in the area.

One survivor, Zahra, told reporters she was leaving the school as the blasts took place.

“My classmate died. A few minutes later there was another explosion, and then another. Everyone was screaming and there was blood everywhere,” she said.

EPAA woman is carried to hospital after the attack

Several witnesses described hearing three separate explosions, while one woman, Reza, told AFP news agency she had seen “many bloodied bodies in dust and smoke”.

“I saw a woman checking the bodies and calling for her daughter,” Reza said. “She then found her daughter’s bloodstained purse after which she fainted and fell to the ground.”

More than 100 people were injured in the attack. Reports from Kabul say the city was busy with shoppers ahead of this year’s celebrations for Eid al-Fitr next week.

Najiba Arian, ministry of education spokeswoman, told Reuters news agency the government-run school was open to boys and girls. Most of the those hurt were girls, who study in the second of three sessions, according to Ms Arian.

What’s the context?

Afghanistan is seeing increasing violence as the US and Nato prepare to pull out all remaining forces from the country on 11 September.

On Saturday the US state department condemned “the barbarous attack”.

“We call for an immediate end to violence and the senseless targeting of innocent civilians,” it said.

The European Union’s mission in Afghanistan said on Twitter that “targeting primarily students in a girls’ school, makes this an attack on the future of Afghanistan”.

The neighbourhood in western Kabul where the blasts occurred is home to many from the Hazara minority community, who are of Mongolian and Central Asian descent and are mainly Shia Muslims.

Almost exactly a year ago, a maternity unit at the local hospital was attacked, leaving 24 women, children and babies dead.

Heather Barr, who works for Human Rights Watch, tweeted a series of videos and photos of what she said was the school in Kabul – including a tour of the site given by one of the students. Ms Barr said the group had filmed a documentary there in 2017.

Analysis by Secunder Kermani, BBC Afghanistan correspondent

So many places in Afghanistan have endured so much pain, but the Dasht-e-Barchi neighbourhood in Kabul has suffered horrendously.

The neighbourhood is populated by members of Afghanistan’s Hazara ethnic minority. As followers of Shia Islam, the Islamic State group (IS) views them as heretics, and has carried out a vicious campaign, attacking the softest of targets.

Dozens have been killed in bombings at sports halls, cultural centres, and places of education in particular.

Last year, and in 2018, IS suicide bombers struck tuition centres in the area killing more than 70 people. IS is not part of the peace talks between the Taliban and Afghan government, which in any case are currently stalled.

As of yet, there’s been no claim for the attack on Saturday. However, IS continues to carry out assassinations and bombings in Kabul and the city of Jalalabad, despite having recently lost much of the territory it once controlled in the east of the country.

(NASHVILLE, Tenn.) FBI Together with TBI & Police Dept Report: Concludes their findings on the explosion that took place on December 25th 2020 around 06:30hrs #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Mar.16: The Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Tennessee, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Metro Nashville Police Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have concluded a significant portion of the investigation into the explosion that occurred on December 25, 2020, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Central Time, in downtown Nashville, Tennessee:

FBI Releases Full Report on Nashville Bombing: The investigative team took diligent steps to determine the reason or reasons why Warner decided to construct and ultimately detonate his device in downtown Nashville on December 25, 2020. The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, based in Quantico, Virginia, further assisted the local investigative team in answering this question:

‘The investigation found that Anthony Quinn Warner of Antioch, Tennessee, acting alone, built and ultimately detonated the vehicle-borne improvised explosive device. His actions were determined to not be related to terrorism’

Following the explosion, the FBI worked closely with our law enforcement partners on a coordinated and comprehensive investigation. After recovering more than 3,000 pounds of evidence from the blast site, combing through more than 2,500 tips, and conducting more than 250 interviews, the investigative team has reached the following conclusions.

Based on analysis of the information and evidence gathered throughout the investigation, the FBI assesses Warner’s detonation of the improvised explosive device was an intentional act in an effort to end his own life, driven in part by a totality of life stressors – including paranoia, long-held individualized beliefs adopted from several eccentric conspiracy theories, and the loss of stabilizing anchors and deteriorating interpersonal relationships.

The FBI assesses Warner specifically chose the location and timing of the bombing so that it would be impactful, while still minimizing the likelihood of causing undue injury. The FBI’s analysis did not reveal indications of a broader ideological motive to use violence to bring about social or political change, nor does it reveal indications of a specific personal grievance focused on individuals or entities in and around the location of the explosion.

It is important to note that only Warner knows the real reason why he detonated his explosive device. However, at this time, the FBI is confident, based on evidence collected, Warner’s own writings, and interviews with those who knew him best, that the above assessment is accurate.

Special Agent in Charge Douglas Korneski of the FBI Memphis Field Office stated, “The FBI would like to thank the citizens and private sector partners of Nashville, Tennessee, for their support during the response and investigation, especially those who provided tips and volunteered their time and resources. Additionally, the collaborative efforts of all local, state and federal agencies who responded to this incident, and the hundreds of hours dedicated by their men and women, were truly invaluable to this unified effort. They exemplified the tireless dedication we’ve come to expect from those who respond to these types of critical incidents.”

USAO staff worked to provide legal guidance and issued legal process such as subpoenas and search warrants necessary to allow investigators to recover evidence and conduct a comprehensive investigation. USAO Public Affairs also worked with partner agencies to coordinate and manage the flow of information to the media and the community as details from the investigation emerged.

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF)

The National Response Team (NRT) which was comprised of 40 members including Certified Fire Investigators and Certified Explosives Specialists focused on the processing of explosives at the scene. The NRT was supported by subject matter experts from the National Center for Explosives Training and Research (NCETR) and the U.S. Bomb Data Center both located in Huntsville, Alabama. Due to the extent of the scene the ATF mobile command vehicle was on site to provide additional support both from the communications as well as analytical perspectives. Additional ATF resources included explosives canines, representatives to ESF-13 and ESF-15 as well as the behavioral analysis unit. Six MNPD personnel from the Central Precinct, a sergeant and five officers, were on the scene when the RV exploded at 6:30 a.m. on December 25, 2020. The response from the MNPD grew exponentially in the minutes and hours following the blast. Hazardous Devices Unit (HDU) officers, who were en route to 2nd Avenue prior to the explosion, started to lockdown the inner perimeter surrounding the actual blast site. All 10 HDU officers responded to the scene and began coordinating initial sweeps of the downtown area looking for any secondary devices with assistance from explosive detection canine teams from the MNPD & Tennessee Highway Patrol. Additional police personnel were requested to expand the perimeter to the interstate with assistance from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Tennessee Task Force 2 Urban Search & Rescue personnel from the Metropolitan Police & Fire Departments responded to assist any persons trapped by the explosion (thankfully, no one was found). Specialized Investigations Division personnel began work at intelligence gathering to determine if the bombing was part of a larger criminal act.

  • The response command structure was divided into 6 elements on Christmas morning, with resources assigned to each:
    • Overall Command (based at Nissan Stadium)
    • Unified Command (based at the Emergency Operations Center)
    • Staging & Logistics Branch
    • Traffic Branch
    • Special Operations Division/Urban Search & Rescue Branch
    • Security Branch
  • Thirty-two (32) traffic posts were established to secure the area. As days passed, the number of traffic posts declined as the perimeter shrank and businesses were allowed to reopen.
  • More than 500 MNPD personnel were part of the response to this incident between December 25 and December 29, 2020.

Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP)

Commissioner Jeff Long and Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Matt Perry immediately called the department into action once notified of the bombing and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security sent a rotation of troopers and agents to assist with the investigation and security of Nashville after the bombing.

  • Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) troopers staffed perimeters, intersections, flew aviation details and cleared downtown buildings with EOD K-9s.
  • The THP’s Criminal Investigation Division worked with local, state and federal agencies to help identify a 17-digit number from parts and pieces of the bombed vehicle. That 17-digit number was used to build and identify a vehicle identification number (VIN) with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).
  • The Tennessee Office of Homeland Security had agents that responded to the command post and coordinated with multiple local, state and federal partners along with the Tennessee Fusion Center during the investigation.
  • 43 Troopers worked 658.5 hours on the Nashville Explosion.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI)

#AceNewsReport – Nov.25: Five killed, 27 wounded in three back to back explosions in Jalalabad city // Khaama Press (KP) image

At least 5 people were #killed and 27 others were wounded in a series of #explosions in Jalalabad city, the provincial capital of eastern Nangarhar province.

Provincial government officials said the incident took place today in the 2nd police district of the city targeting a top security official who was killed in the attack.

The officials further added that the target of the #explosion was the chief of the detention center of the provincial jail who was #killed along with his son in the attack.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Ataullah Khogyani said the second blast took place targeted the convoy of the security forces as they were on their way to the blast site.

Khogyani further added that the third blast took place in the same area where the first blast took place as the security forces had gathered and cordoned off the area.

No group has so far claimed responsibility behind the back to back explosions so far.

Nangarhar is among the relatively peaceful provinces in eastern Afghanistan but the anti-government armed militant groups including the #Taliban insurgents and loyalists of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group are actively operating in a number of its remote districts.
