(BEIJING) Centre For Information Resillence (CIR) Report: A sprawling network of more than 350 fake social media profiles is pushing pro-China narratives and attempting to discredit those seen as opponents of the government, according to a new study #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.07: The aim is to delegitimise the West and boost China’s influence and image overseas, the report by the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR) suggests.

#AceDailyNews says a recent study on a fake network pushes pro-China propaganda shared with the BBC, found that the network of fake profiles circulated garish cartoons depicting, among others, exiled Chinese tycoon Guo Wengui, an outspoken critic of China and inside the pro-China network targeting the US, Hong Kong and an exiled tycoon

By Flora Carmichael
BBC News

Graphic of anonymous people at computers with a Chinese character on all their screens
The cartoons shared seek to ridicule (left-right) Bannon, Li-Meng Yan and Guo Wengui

Other controversial figures featured in the cartoons included “whistleblower” scientist Li-Meng Yan, and Steve Bannon, former political strategist for Donald Trump.

Each of these individuals has themselves been accused of spreading disinformation, including false information about Covid-19.

Some of the accounts – spread across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube – use fake AI-generated profile pictures, while others appear to have been hijacked after previously posting in other languages.

There is no concrete evidence that the network is linked to the Chinese government, but according to the CIR, a non-profit group which works to counter disinformation, it resembles pro-China networks previously taken down by Twitter and Facebook.

These networks amplified pro-China narratives similar to those promoted by Chinese state representatives and state media.

Much of the content shared by the network focuses on the US, and in particular on divisive issues like gun laws and race politics to infiltrate Chinese-American far-right networks

One of the narratives pushed by the network paints the US as having a poor human rights record. Posts from the fake accounts cite the murder of George Floyd among examples, as well as discrimination against Asians.

This account has since been suspended by Twitter for violating its rules

Some accounts repeatedly deny human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region, where experts say China has detained at least a million Muslims against their will, calling the allegations “lies fabricated by the United States and the West” and the foreigners in China’s disinformation drive

“The aim of the network appears to be to delegitimise the West by amplifying pro-Chinese narratives,” said Benjamin Strick, the author of the CIR report.

There are strong similarities between this network and the so-called “Spamouflage Dragon” propaganda network identified by social analytics firm Graphika.

Commenting on the new study Ira Hubert, a senior investigative analyst at Graphika, said: “The report shows that on US platforms, there was no ‘honeymoon’ in the first months of the Biden administration.

“The network put out a steady mix of anti-US content, for example cheering US ‘defeat’ ahead of its withdrawal from Afghanistan and painting the US as a poor ally whose aid to India was inadequate during some of its worst months battling Covid.”

How was the network uncovered?

The CIR mapped hashtags favoured by previously identified networks, unearthing more accounts that showed signs of being part of an influence operation.

Tell-tale signs included high levels of activity pushing propaganda narratives and repeated use of the same hashtags. Newly created accounts, accounts with usernames that appeared to be randomly generated, and accounts with very few followers also raised red flags.

Some profiles were created to post original content, while others only shared, liked and commented on those original posts, to help them reach a wider audience.

This kind of activity is often referred to as “astroturfing” because it is designed to create the appearance of a grass-roots campaign.

Benjamin Strick / CIRThe study visualises how different accounts amplify each other – each small node represents a Twitter account

Fake people

Many of the fake profiles used AI generated photos – a relatively new phenomenon that allows computers to create realistic looking images of people who don’t exist. Unlike stolen profile images of real people, the AI generated images, which are created by a type of machine learning framework called StyleGAN, cannot be traced using a reverse image search.

The use of fake profile pictures in disinformation campaigns is becoming more common as users and platforms become more wary of suspicious accounts.

The CIR used various techniques to identify fake profile pictures in the network. The synthetic images always put the eyes in the same location, so lining them all up can help identify a collection of fake profile pictures.

Normally, a random collection of profile pictures would display much more variety in the cropping and the alignment of the eyes.

Benjamin Strick / CIRThe network uses images of people who do not exist

Other signs include blurred edges around the hair, teeth at strange angles, and blurred objects around the face.

Many of the Facebook accounts believed to be part of the network appeared to have Turkish names. These accounts may once have belonged to real people but were later hijacked or sold and given new profile pictures.

Hijacked accounts also spread the network’s pro-China narratives on YouTube. Accounts that had previously posted in English or German and then lain dormant for years suddenly started posting Chinese language content from official Chinese state broadcasters.

Benjamin Strick / CIRThe report found spam Tweets using the same text, tags and images all uploaded on the same day

The CIR shared its research with the social media platforms involved.

Facebook has removed the accounts on its platform highlighted in the study.

A Facebook spokesman said: “In September 2019, we removed a network of spam activity that posted lifestyle and political clickbait, primarily in Chinese. This network had almost no engagement on our platform, and we continue to work with researchers and our industry peers to detect and block their attempts to come back, like those accounts mentioned in this report.”

YouTube also terminated accounts in the network for violating YouTube’s community guidelines.

Twitter said it had also now removed almost all of the accounts identified by CIR, as well as a number of others engaged in similar behaviour. It said its investigations are still ongoing.

“When we identify information operation campaigns that we can reliably attribute to state-linked activity – either domestic or foreign-led – we disclose them to our public archive.”

Analysis – Kerry Allen, BBC Monitoring China media analystOver the past decade, billions of dollars have gone into funding the growth of China’s presence on international platforms. But with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube blocked in the mainland, and only accessible via a VPN, the country has struggled to get such platforms recognised as viable competitors to Western juggernauts: It has needed not only Chinese voices, but foreign voices, to show that the country has “arrived”.”Wolf warrior diplomacy” has emerged, with officials using Twitter accounts to fly the flag for Communist Party rhetoric: China wants to portray itself as a friend to the world – and not a repressive, authoritarian state, as it perceives Western nations make it out to be. With more than one billion internet users, China certainly has the capability to orchestrate large-scale social media campaigns, and target what it sees as anti-China voices with a wealth of opposing opinions: But with English-language skills limited in China, there are often clumsy tell-tale signs that a Chinese troll is behind such accounts: Many rely on automatic translation software to turn Chinese messages into English, meaning such messages are riddled with typos, or contain clumsy grammatical structures. And with many Western outlets inaccessible to them within China, users generally have very little knowledge of who they are meant to be targeting, so they simply piggyback off the replies of others from within the same network.

(BEIJING) China Floods Report: At least 33-people died in Zhengzhou Province as Chinese are using social media to help speed up rescue efforts after deadly floods engulfed Henan province #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.22: From sharing public health information to contacts for support, China’s Weibo platform became an online space connecting people seeking help with rescue teams.

#AceDailyNews says China Floods: As people unite on social media to help flood victims and at least 33 people have died in the province after Zhengzhou city saw a year’s worth of rainfall in three days one resident said I was lucky that I stayed at home, but we [still] felt like we were going to be washed away,” Wang Qian told BBC OS from Zhengzhou.

Cars sit in floodwaters after heavy rains hit the city of Zhengzhou in China's central Henan province on July 21, 2021.
Zhengzhou city was devastated by floods after it saw a year’s worth of rainfall in three days

Encouraging hashtags such as “Henan, stay strong!” also quickly went viral.

As people shared tales of horror and pleaded for help online, thousands of social media users responded by redirecting their Weibo posts to emergency rescue teams so that they knew where to go.

For instance, as news emerged that various trains were being stranded after rail lines got submerged, people put together lists of each train number and the resources its passengers needed.

Some put together text-only versions of critical contact lists, after discovering that people in some areas could not download images because heavy rains had affected internet speeds.

Netizens also helped to organise streams of information so that it was up-to-date and clear.

According to local media reports, residents living near the Tielu Railway Station also delivered food and bottled water to passengers stuck in a train after the hashtag “K226 call for emergency rescue” was viewed more than 800 million times. Video showed floodwater rising on a busy commuter train

While some focused on giving emergency rescue advice, others shared information on mental health support and personal hygiene tips.

A hashtag related to menstruation amid the floods had more than 200 million views, as doctors and social workers reminded women to change their sanitary pads frequently to avoid the risk of infection. Others posted addresses to locations where women could collect free sanitary products.

As floodwater crashed through a busy subway station in China on Tuesday, desperate passengers tried to flee while others were swept helplessly off platforms.

In one train carriage, water seeped in and rose from ankle, to waist, to neck-height. Panicked commuters stretched upwards to breathe, while others lifted shorter people into the shrinking air pocket above.

In terrifying videos shared on social media, some passengers can be seen standing on chairs and clinging to the ceiling as the floodwater creeps upwards. One tried to smash a window, before realising that there was even more water outside the carriage.

Some filmed the unfolding tragedy, while others called loved ones or posted pleas for help. “I can’t speak any more,” one woman wrote on the social media site Weibo. “If no rescue comes in 20 minutes, hundreds of us will lose our lives.”

“We were all standing on the seats, and the water was already on our knees,” a woman who gave her name as Ms Li told Elephant News.

“Some shorter passengers had water up to their necks,” she said, adding that as time went on the air supply began to diminish.

After about an hour, the train carriage was plunged into darkness and the oxygen level waned further. “I was really scared, but the most terrifying thing was not the water, but the diminishing air supply,” one person told Reuters news agency.

After several hours of fear and uncertainty, rescuers were able to gain access through the roof of the carriage and pulled people out. “We knocked on the glass a bit [on the ceiling]. Then suddenly there was air,” an unnamed woman told state broadcaster CCTV.

Hundreds of people were eventually saved from the flooded subway tunnel in Zhengzhou, a city of 12 million people that sits on the banks of the Yellow River in central Henan province.

But at least 12 are known to have died and five were injured in the subway disaster, which came after the region saw more rainfall in three days than it usually would in a year.

This is a rainy time of year in China and floods happen annually. However, Chinese scientists say global warming has made the situation more dangerous and warn that extreme weather could become more frequent in the future.

In Henan, at least 33 people have died and more than 200,000 have been evacuated. Major roads have been turned into rivers, with cars and debris being swept along by fast moving currents.

Harrowing accounts of the subway tragedy, and of the dramatic flooding around the province, are continuing to emerge, with witnesses describing scenes of fear and chaos.

“At the start there wasn’t much water, then it was like it all started coming at once,” one woman who was on the flooded subway train told the news outlet Pear Video.

“Within about 30 minutes it was up to my shoulders,” she said. “It was hard to breathe. A lot of people fainted.”

The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she was trapped for more than four hours and cried when she was finally rescued.

“There was so much water on the platform, and there was water streaming out of the cracks in the subway doors,” another passenger told Jiupai News.

“I’m quite tall, but after about five minutes, the water was already at my chest,” he said. “Tall people helped short people and children up onto the seats. I was holding someone’s child.”

In one post on Weibo, a woman described the panic in the carriage. “Many people started to suffer breathing difficulties,” she wrote. “I heard a nearby passenger on her phone, giving her bank account details to her family, and thought I should do the same.”

“Water was leaking from the cracks in the door, more and more of it, all of us who could, stood on the subway seats,” another post read.A woman was filmed being swept down the street amid the extreme flooding

Dramatic images have also been shared of rescues above ground. Emergency workers have used long ropes to pull people to safety as they were dragged along by gushing currents.

“I’ve contacted all of my family and luckily they’re all safe. “There’s a lot of damage around us. I can see the floods everywhere, lots of cars and water everywhere,” she said.

Rescue efforts are continuing around the province, while further downpours have been forecast for the rest of the week.

“We’re all waiting to see if everything will be OK soon,” Ms Wang said. “We’re very scared.”

(BEIJING) JUST IN: At least 12 people have been killed and 39 seriously injured after a gas line explosion tore through a residential neighbourhood in central China #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.14: The statement said rescue efforts were continuing but gave no word on the cause of the explosion:

CHINA: Responders to the early Sunday morning blast in the Hubei province city of Shiyan sent more than 150 people to hospital, according to a statement on the city’s official social media channel.

Play Video. Duration: 23 seconds
Buildings were reduced to rubble after a gas line explosion ripped through a residential compound in Hubei province.

Stall keepers and customers buying breakfast and fresh vegetables at a food market were the major victims when the explosion hit shortly after 6:00am local time, according to state media reports.

Images showed rescuers climbing over broken concrete slabs to reach those trapped inside.

The blast appeared similar to one that occurred in the north-eastern port of Qingdao in 2013, in which 55 people were killed when underground pipelines ripped open following a leak.

The Shiyan explosion came a day after eight people died and three others were injured when toxic methyl formate leaked from a vehicle at a chemical handling facility in the south-western city of Guiyang.

Frequent deadly accidents are usually traced to weak adherence to safety standards, poor maintenance and corruption among enforcement bodies.

Those responsible are often handed harsh punishments, but high demand and the desire for profits often trump such concerns.

Among the worst accidents was a massive 2015 explosion at a chemical warehouse in the port city of Tianjin that killed 173 people, most of them firefighters and police officers.

The blast was blamed on illegal construction and unsafe storage of volatile materials.

(LONDON) Southwark Crown Court Report: A man has been jailed for drugging and raping a woman he had met through an online app.#AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.11: Adrian Reid, 31 (26.09.89) of Huxley Road, N18 appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, 8 June where he was sentenced as follows:

  1. Rape – sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.
  2. Administering a substance with intent – sentenced to five years imprisonment to run concurrently to the above.
  3. Theft – sentenced to one year imprisonment for theft.

LONDON: Total to be served – twelve years imprisonment the court heard how Reid had contacted the woman, aged in her 20s, via a social media app using an alias. They had agreed to meet at her flat in Paddington in the early hours of 30 June 2020.

Adrian Reid, 31

Reid arrived and brought with him a bottle of alcohol and a bottle of soft drink. During their time together, Reid mixed drinks and gave them to the woman. After a while she began to feel unwell and Reid raped her before she passed out.

When she awoke in the morning, Reid was gone. She also realised a quantity of cash had been stolen from her flat.

Following forensic phone work, officers managed to identify Reid and arrested him on 2 July. Officers searched his flat and car and found a small bottle of clear liquid along with the drinks bottles he had taken to the flat. Analysis revealed the clear liquid was GHB and traces of this were also found in the bottle.

Reid was charged but denied the offences; however, due to the weight of evidence against him, a jury took just 40 minutes to convict him on 14 December 2020.

Detective Constable Pat Tully from the Central West Safeguarding Team based at Westminster said:
“Adrian Reid is a sexual predator and I am pleased that he will now face a significant period of time in jail: I hope the woman Reid attacked can take some solace in the fact he has been convicted – her bravery in coming forward has ensured a dangerous man is now behind bars: It is clear that this was not an opportunistic crime; Reid had clearly gone to some lengths in planning and then carrying out his attack: This leads me to believe that this may not have been his only offence and I would appeal to anyone who may have encountered Reid and been attacked by him to come forward and speak to police: Specially trained officers are available to support and help you, and our dedicated team will ensure any allegations are investigated sensitively and thoroughly.”

(EL PASO, Tx.) ICE/HSI/CBP/OFO REPORT: Increase in ‘Drug Trafficking’ on social media platforms and recruiting smugglers on Facebook #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – June.06: Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO), have identified the increased use of social media platforms such as Facebook, by transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), to recruit and facilitate drug smuggling in the El Paso area:

TEXAS: ICE/HSI/CBP/El Paso: Drug trafficking networks recruiting smugglers on Facebook: The TCOs advertise various jobs such as money couriers for money service businesses such as Casas De Cambio, or money exchange houses, and unsuspecting job seekers reply with their interest to the advertisement. The solicitor, or “recruiter,” will then send a direct message to the job seeker with more information about the job.

For example, recruitment advertisements HSI special agents have spotted on Facebook may read as follows: “Our company is looking for individuals who are able to cross into El Paso. We work directly with the Casas de Cambio and transport money from El Paso to Ciudad Juarez (Mexico).”

The recruiter will reassure the job seekers that everything is legal. The recruiter will request an “interview” with the job seekers in Ciudad Juarez to explain the job in further detail.

The reality is that members of the TCO will take the job seeker’s vehicle and conceal narcotics within it. The unsuspecting individuals will pick up their vehicles and are instructed to cross through one of the El Paso ports of entry. Once they have crossed into the United States, they are instructed to call the recruiter to pick up the vehicle.

HSI advises job seekers to research the name and address of the company that is recruiting them. Legitimate businesses neither conduct interviews in parking lots nor do they take custody of a potential employee’s vehicle. Job seekers should also obtain the employer’s information and ask for company identification.

“Individuals caught with contraband in their vehicles trying to enter the United States risk being arrested and convicted,” said Erik P. Breitzke, special agent in charge of HSI El Paso. “HSI will continue to work jointly with CBP to intercept and prevent drugs from coming into the country and poisoning our communities. Do not allow yourself to be used as a smuggler.”

CBP reminds the traveling public that when a driver presents themselves at a port of entry, they are responsible for all items found in the vehicle and charged if illegal or prohibited goods are located during the inspection process. Any offer to drive a vehicle on the behalf of another should be met with suspicion.

“CBP encourages the public not to entrust their vehicles and their safety to ‘job recruiters’ they meet online,” said CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha,” We encourage the public to be aware of job ads from social media that seem too good to be true.”

HSI encourages the public to report any suspicious activity through its toll-free Tip Line at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE or by completing its online tip form. Both are staffed around the clock by investigators, and callers may remain anonymous. From outside the U.S. and Canada, callers should dial 802-872-6199. Hearing impaired users can call TTY 802-872-6196.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) is a directorate of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel, and finance move. HSI’s workforce of over 10,400 employees consists of more than 7,100 special agents assigned to 220 cities throughout the United States, and 80 overseas locations in 53 countries. HSI’s international presence represents DHS’s largest investigative law enforcement presence abroad and one of the largest international footprints in U.S. law enforcement.

‘ HRW ASKS IRAN’S JUDICIARY TO ANNUL DEATH SENTENCE FOR INSULTING THE PROPHET’

#AceNewsServices – IRAN – Dec.02 – Human Rights Watch has called on Iran’s judiciary on Tuesday to annul the death sentence of a 30-year-old man who faces execution for Facebook posts linked to his account.

' Soheil Arabi '

‘ Soheil Arabi ‘

Tehran’s Supreme Court on November 24 upheld a criminal court ruling sentencing Soheil Arabi to hang despite the fact that he had not written many of the posts and that he was sharing others’ views on the social media site.

A Tehran criminal court had convicted him in August of “insulting the prophet.” HRW’s deputy Middle East and North Africa director Eric Goldstein said Iran should “urgently revise its penal code to eliminate provisions that criminalize peaceful free expression, especially when they punish its exercise with death.”

‘ DES DAUGHTER NETWORK SPREADING SOCIAL MEDIA AWARENESS ‘

#AceFriendsNews – Featured Site News – Nov.14 – Spreading awareness of the:

DES Daughter Network

DES Daughter Network blog image of dandelion seeds

My DES Daughter Network blog is the little sister of my “Diethylstibestrol, Journal of a DES Daughter” website blog but with a focus on social media and social networking. This blog features and displays the social media networks of existing DES groups and individuals who have an online social media presence aimed at raising DES awareness.  This new blog provides me with an additional platform where I can express myself about DES issues and share my experience of using social media networks to support this cause with others interested in the health and personal problems associated with DES exposure.

Why a new blog?

Around the world, thousands, maybe millions of people are totally unaware that they were exposed to Diethylstilbestrol DES Diethylstilbestrol DES Google+ Page icon, a toxic and carcinogenic drug. All of these people are not receiving proper medical treatment, or making truly informed decisions about their healthcare, as a result.

How do you reach out to these people?  One answer which immediately came to my mind when I started writing my “Journal of aDES Daughter is through the use of social media and social networking.

Nowadays, social media and social networking tools are vital to building a strong online presence. The use of social media is stronger than ever.Facebook, Flickr, Google+, Twitter, YouTube are just some of the popular forms of social media used by millions around the world on a daily basis. Chances are, anyone you speak to today has at least one, if not more of these accounts.

To me, social media is simply the easiest, fastest and cheapest, yet effective way to raise DES awareness.

The 4 “C’s of Social Media for the DES cause
Connect, Contribute, Collaborate, Change

  • Connect: DES, like social media, is about people. People affected by this drug disaster often feel lonely and would benefit from connecting with other DES victims.
  • Contribute: DES information needs to be instantly available to the public to generate an instant reaction and increase awareness.
  • Collaborate: DES is a worldwide tragedy. DES information, studies and data need to be shared to better understand the full extent of the health issues associated with DES exposure. Social media increases potential for collaboration.
  • Change: The DES story needs to be told not just through studies, statistics, numbers and figures but through real life experiences. The collective voice of DES victims on social media platforms can bring about change. Lessons must be learned so that history doesn’t repeat itself.

Despite the number of people affected by the DES tragedy and the hard work of DES support groups and activists, the DES cause is going unnoticed, or not noticed enough among the general public. The use of social media can change this. In today’s fast-moving world, we will make a difference and bring about change only if we connect, contribute, and collaborate.

NSA: ‘ Edward Snowden Hits Out At Social Media Data Privacy Advising Drop-Box ASAP ‘

#AceNewsServices – October 12 – Edward Snowden has hit out at Dropbox and other services he says are “hostile to privacy,” urging web users to abandon unencrypted communication and adjust privacy settings to prevent governments from spying on them in increasingly intrusive ways.

“We are no longer citizens, we no longer have leaders. We’re subjects, and we have rulers,” Snowden told The New Yorker magazine in a comprehensive hour-long interview.

There is not enough investment into security research, into understanding how metadata could better be protected and why that is more necessary today than yesterday, he said.

The whistleblower believes one fallacy in how authorities view individual rights has to do with making the individual forsake those rights by default. Snowden’s point is that the moment you are compelled to reveal that you have nothing to hide is when the right to privacy stops being a right – because you are effectively waiving that right.

“When you say, ‘I have nothing to hide,’ you’re saying, ‘I don’t care about this right.’ You’re saying, ‘I don’t have this right, because I’ve got to the point where I have to justify it.’ The way rights work is, the government has to justify its intrusion into your rights – you don’t have to justify why you need freedom of speech.”

In that situation, it becomes OK to live in a world where one is no longer interested in privacy as such – a world where Facebook, Google and Dropbox have become ubiquitous, and where there are virtually no safeguards against the wrongful use of the information one puts there.

SOCIAL MEDIA: ‘ Facebook and Twitter Unveil Plans for E-Commerce Buy-Button but Privacy Concerns Over Data Exist’s ‘

#AceNewsServices – UNITED STATES – October 05 – With the holiday season quickly approaching, the world’s social media heavyweights have unveiled plans that would allow users to go shopping on their sites, opening up a lucrative and largely-untapped form of e-commerce.

While most Facebook and Twitter users regularly click on options such as ‘like’ or ‘share’ from their friends’ accounts, another option is coming down the social media pipe that will give users an ability to ‘buy’ products as well.
However, given the recent controversy that Facebook created after it was revealed to be conducting secret experiments on its users, some people may be wary of the social media network venturing into on-line retail shopping.

On July 02 RT investigated how Facebook’s experiment on over half-a-million unsuspecting users has taken a new twist with the revelation that a researcher connected to a Department of Defence-funded program to use the military to quell civil unrest also participated in the study.

Social media sites exploded over the weekend after it was revealed that Facebook, no stranger to controversy of late, secretly manipulated posts being seen by nearly 700,000 users in 2012 in order to allow researchers to study how emotional states are transmitted over the platform.

Results of the week-long study conducted by researchers at Facebook, Cornell University, and the University of California appeared in the June edition of the journal ‘Proceedings of the National Academy of Scientists’ (PNAS) under the rather insidious title, ‘Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks’.

Facebook altered the content that showed up on certain users’ news feeds to control the number of posts that contained words with positively or negatively charged emotions.

The team concluded its federally funded study by saying that “emotions spread via contagion through a network.”

When word hit the internet that Facebook was essentially conducting Orwellian thought policing, an electronic outpouring of condemnation greeted the company that Mark Zuckerberg built. One of the study’s authors, Adam Kramer, took to his own Facebook account to offer more of an explanation than an apology for the secret study.

“We felt that it was important to investigate the common worry that seeing friends post positive content leads to people feeling negative or left out,” Kramer said. “At the same time, we were concerned that exposure to friends’ negativity might lead people to avoid visiting Facebook. We didn’t clearly state our motivations in the paper.”

The attack on Facebook looks set to worsen as it was discovered that one of the authors of the platform’s mind study, Jeffrey T. Hancock of Cornell University, also received funding from the Pentagon’s so-called Minerva Research Initiative to conduct a similar study entitled ‘Modeling Discourse and Social Dynamics in Authoritarian Regimes’.

Reuters / Dado Ruvic

Reuters / Dado Ruvic

The Pentagon-funded Minerva program provides cash awards to everyone from “single investigators to large multi-university consortia,” according to its website and includes “researchers from 32 academic institutions, including six non-US universities and four industry or non-profit organizations.”

The program will disperse around six million dollars in 2014 and $17 million over the next three years.

Hancock’s description page at Cornell University cites psychological and interpersonal dynamics of social media, deception, and language” as his research and academic interests.

Hancock’s study appeared in 2009, one year before the US Army War College’s Strategic Institute warned in a different study, and in the wake of the global financial meltdown, that the United States could experience massive civil unrest from a series of crises it termed “strategic shock.”

The report, which carried the Rumsfeldian title, ‘Known Unknowns: Unconventional Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development’, suggested that the military may have to be called in to restore domestic order in the event of a massive social breakdown.

“Widespread civil violence inside the United States would force the defense establishment to reorient priorities in extremis to defend basic domestic order and human security,” the report, authored by [Ret.] Lt. Col. Nathan Freir, states.

Meanwhile, Cornell University participated in another study under the Minerva Research Initiative (and supervised by the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research) that looks to predict “the dynamics of social movement mobilization and contagions.”

The project hopes to foresee “the critical mass [tipping point]” of social unrest and upheaval by studying their “digital traces” from a number of recent events, including the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the 2013 Gezi Park protests in Turkey.

At the same time, Twitter feeds and conversations will be examined “to identify individuals mobilized in a social contagion and when they become mobilized.”

Facebook apologizes after psychological experiment caused outrage

Coming so soon after the Snowden leaks, the idea of a researcher closely affiliated with a Pentagon study now secretly examining the behavior of Facebook users under ‘controlled conditions’ is certainly cause for alarm.

This latest scandal also speaks volumes about the disturbing frequency of US educational facilities cooperating so directly with military programs that do not appear to have the best interests of the civil society at the core of their actions.

India: “Plans to put `Safe Guards onto Social Media Sites’ such as Facebook and Twitter”

#AceWorldNews says the Indian home affairs minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that the government was planning to put a check on social media sites. He backed the move by alleging “misuse” of social media and hinted they incited riots between Hindu and Muslim communities in Uttar Pradesh in August last year.

The minister made his comments while addressing the launch of a Hindi newspaper in Patna in the north of India, and also said that newspapers face a challenge to uphold honest journalism.

Bank of America: “Social Media Trolling” to Carry-Out Spying on Political Groups” Uncovered

#AceSecurityNews says according to SL an email uncovered through a Washington state public records request has confirmed the existence of a Bank of America “social media trolling” spy team, used to carry out surveillance on multiple political groups by Washington state activist Andrew Hendricks, the email, dated September 23, 2013, details a conversation between Bank of American’s Global Corporate Security Vice President Kim Triplett-Kolerich, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and one redacted recipient.

BOFA EmailDiscussing the then upcoming Anonymous “Million Mask March” at the state’s capitol, Kolerich, who previously spent over 25 years in the Washington State Patrol, details the bank’s superior ability to track political groups.

“If you find any intel on Anarchists or Occupy Protesters please let me know – I will most likely find it first as Social Media trolling is not what the WSP does best,” Kolerich says. “Bank of America has a team of 20 people and that’s all they do all day and then pass it to us around the country!!”

Whether Kolerich is referring to a specific Washington state based team or the total number of paid “trolls” is unclear, though the possibility of multiple nationwide teams seems much more likely.

Comments made earlier in the email by Kolerich reveal the bank’s private history with law enforcement as well, specifically regarding previous and upcoming “intel” exchanges.

May Day I will pick your brain for intel and I will give you a lot also,” Kolerich says. “The Public-Private partnership worked great last year and hopefully being ahead of the anarchists will protect all of you from protests/arrests/injury.”

Page 12 of the public records release, which details an October email exchange, also shows the bank’s relationship with the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) as well as the state’s Homeland Security run Fusion Center.

“Sorry for not getting back to you sooner – hectic weeks lately with foreclosures and this MMM march,” Kolerich says. “We are not seeing much – I understand the WSP is ramping up but I haven’t checked with the Fusion Center and JTTF…”

The permitted three-hour protest, which drew around 100 peaceful protesters to the state’s capitol, was surveilled by multiple agencies as well as a fixed wing aircraft, costing taxpayers over $28,000.

While Kolerich can only be linked to law enforcement groups in Washington state, the likelihood of the bank sharing data with countless agencies across the country is apparent.

This follows and gives even more validity to a major data release by Anonymous last year, where information on an unsecured server pointed to Bank of America’s spying as well.

Similar to the NSA’s collusion with private companies, the emails represent yet another example of the government using private groups to spy on Americans.

” Who Really Owns Your Data Once Mined “

"Tracking Your Every Move"

“Tracking Your Every Move”

#AceSecurityNews says with all the recent news about Prism and as this video by “Info-Wars” confirms the data we though we once owned, our personal private data has now become the most prized possession ever!  Once called the “Word of God” prior to the fall of Adam and his mate ,then to be corrupted by man for generations, from lies to absolute corruption of our very lives! As with the advent of theWorldwide Web we could shared everything, and spread our corruption to the very corners of the globe, eventually becoming like “God’s Knowing Good and Evil” – though we were only at the “Beginning of the End” there was still a lot more to come.

Though little was known about how such a simple and harmless act of sharing would one day lead ,to the advent of “Social Media” and this was the next step of the downfall of mankind. As everyone never saw it coming but was sucked into the web of sharing not knowing or even caring where their data ended up.

"How We track Your Every Move"

“How We track Your Every Move”

Seeing an “Eye to a Main Chance” or an eventual way to make money, it was then “Social Media” hit our lives and everyone was led down the path of having a “Facebook Page” and sharing their very lives, from their most intimate secrets to their likes and dislikes. We were told the data could be protected just by adding the word private in our settings, our emails would not be shared with anyone and all our photographs were still ours. Others saw the benefit of Sharing but it was not the “Social Media” companies that were sharing anything ,it was us. Oh yes the

Judas Iscariot

Judas Iscariot (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Facebook, Twitter and Google media site’s were indeed classed as “Free” but the meaning of “Free” was being distorted and altered. As upgrade, by upgrade until we were all sucked into the world of ” Thinking We Were Protected” but all the time “Data Mining Companies” such as “Prism and Palantir” waited in the wings, like a devil on horseback ready to ride in and claim our data as their “Right” all under the new name of “Protecting Our National Interest” and these companies with their massive mainframes bulging with all that data, we so easily shared ,archived and saved in our “Now” – Not So Personal Settings were being “Mined” for every tiny morsel of information about Who, we were and What we do and How we do it, passing these titbits for a few ” Silver Coins” like “Judas Iscariotselling-out “Jesus”for 30 pieces of silver, to the Romans for his eventually crucifixion.

Though this time it was not his crucifixion we had to witness but it would eventually be ours ,our want to have everything, to pay for everything through companies such as PayPal who would sell us out to the highest bidder or better still to watch the CIA provide the “Venture Capital” to fund these “Data Mining Companies” now with the latest reason being renamed ” National Security” and so an agency was formed called the #NSA to collate and log all our data and strip it clean. This agency would become able to use our “Data” to find our everything ,from our shopping habits, to our preferences at the next election. Of course “Social Media” companies had allowed this to happen as their pay off their 30 pieces of silver would be they could increase their coffers, with ad revenue and increased ad revenue would mean more sales ,meaning more income and more income would mean bigger and bigger sites, able to mine more information.

No longer was our “Private Data” as the companies paid had given it away to “Security Companies” and had sold their “Souls To The Devil” all in the name of “Looking After Number One” and increasing their revenue by selling us out to the highest bidder.

Regards, Editor – Ace News Group

The NSA (National Security Agency) isn’t good enough to be that bad.  You try to hire 10,000 +/- highly trained cyber trackers.  About as easy as hiring 10,000 professional airport security folks.  So don’t wring your hands over how much they know about you.  It could be worse.  They could know what they’re doing.  They just need a better name, a better charter for existence, a better pitch.  We came up with the solution to all the complaining.  When it is done, they’ll be your BFF (Best Friend Forever).

Of course if you want to share this with others, GREAT!!!

NSA Just Needs a Better Name, New Service Offerings

“Okay, now your servers are down because of a power surge, a grid malfunction, or maybe even a bomb. Now, if the intruder tries to reboot your servers or access the data, he’ll always hit this screen.” – Max Peterson, “The Echelon Conspiracy,” Dark Castle Entertainment, 2009

The National Security Agency (NSA) isn’t doing much more than any red-blooded, we’re-in-this for-the-money cloud service or social media organization is doing.

They’re scrounging through all the information that just happens to pass their way to find something of interest, something useful.

Okay, they’re a little different because they don’t sell the information to the highest bidder. They store the stuff for later when they can figure out what to do with it.

Yes, they do have a broader area to search; but then, they aren’t in it just for the money.

For that matter, they aren’t doing much more than every government in every country is doing.

In London, it’s estimated that Brits are captured on photos and video 300 times a day by cameras mounted throughout the city. Their intelligence service even got so creative as to monitor dumpsters, but that came to an end.

It wasn’t because citizens promised to do a better job of recycling; someone just determined it was a really dumb idea.

Mossad, MI5, Italy’s P2, India’s IB, Russia’s RAW, Japan’s PSIA, China’s MSS and their brethren around the globe constantly monitor and analyze communications, internal and external.

Oh heck face it all of the governmental “legal” agencies are there to catch the bad guys/gals and keep you on the straight-and-narrow.

You, not them!

They usually follow Raymond Burke’s advice, “Don’t get caught.”

Weather Plus – Thousands of satellites circle the globe constantly to check the weather and other things like the volumes of communications that are being constantly sent by people through service providers and sites. They help minimize malware infection and other problems. The automated systems and their managers just hate it when you encrypt the files/communications.

If you think the U.S.’s anti-terrorism laws give agencies like the NSA too much freedom to search online files … think again.

In today’s environment, all of these protection organizations occasionally get carried away with their work.

It isn’t hard for them to repeat what Max Peterson said, “Relax, I’m a professional.”

Just remember, they went from zero to 10,000ish big data researchers/analysts in 3-6 months much like the TSA (Transportation Security Agency) went from zero to 10,000ish highly trained travel protection agents in 30-90 days.

On the other hand, it isn’t as though people make it very difficult for them.

iNet Minute – People love how online services enable them to communicate with folks around the world and, more importantly, talk about themselves on a growing number of social media sites.  The web has become such a popular means of expression that it has become a fire hose of documents, data, information.

True, I’m really not that into your hourly Facebook posts/Likes/dislikes, daily Linked professional conquests, minute-by-minute Tweets or any of the other free-to-express-yourself social media activities that are available to all of us.

Police agencies have found some folks postings very interesting.

Divorce lawyers love it when the guy (or gal) brags about his/her “outside activity.”

In other words, some folks just can’t express themselves enough!

That’s what got agent Grant fired when he posted on his boss’ Facebook page, “I’m impressed. I always thought you were a little stupid.”

Share, Share Alike – Pre-teens, teens and Gen Yers who grew up on the iNet/web simply feel that sharing most or all of their information is just practical and logical. The open communications has spread to almost every generation and nationality.

It’s interesting that a number of social media research reports have found that a large number of people felt that what they posted on social media sites or put up in the soft, puffy cloud was not admissible in court and could not be used against them.

It can … it is!

Actually, the NSA and security folks don’t grab all of that stuff out of the clouds.

No, they go to where all that information rests – the data centers where it’s stored.

Knock on the door and …

Storage in the Cloud – While people always refer to storing their stuff in the cloud, they need to also understand that the cloud storage facility is a real building. These silos of documents, information, images/photos are where social media services and other organizations store and mine all the best possible data.

All those data centers poke into the cloud but are firmly planted on the ground around the globe.

They won’t tell you exactly where the cloud storage facility is located, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to find them.

Just look for places where there is ample, cheap power and favorable taxes and BAM!

The really big data centers need huge amounts of power to run the servers/storage and keep them cool.

All of the shared information creates a terrific strain on the computers, SSDs and hard drives to store and share your stuff.

None of that was something the NSA had expected or knew how to deal with.

Overblown –  Like a tidal wave of dust sweeping across the plains, the NSA receives more information, more content, more stuff than any person, any machine could sift through and scrutinize. The best thing they can do is stream it to hard drives and store them deep in a mountain until they have a free moment. Until then, they glance at less than .00004 percent of the world’s iNet traffic.

Right now, they store the stuff on HDs and ship them to a mountain cave until they can figure out what to do with the stuff they might use … some day.

So what they really need is a better name, a better mission statement.

The new name? National Storage Agency (won’t have to change the initials on their coffee cups).

Then pitch themselves as the country’s corporate and personal storage service and add a service that will have people standing in line around the block  – free, automatic backup of your devices/drives.

Most folks don’t backup their drives until it’s too late. Their new free service will automate/handle the job for you.

They could say they are only following Max Peterson’s guidance, “Oh yes, just in case.”

Then, they can contract with the social media and online storage companies to hold all the stuff for you … and them.

The NSA is no longer an electronic spying operation. And the cloud companies that do the best job of storing, finding, retrieving information about you will give them huge government contracts.

Everyone wins … problem solved!

All they have to do is remember what Max Peterson told them, “This is your BIOS-level password. Without it, nothing works in this room.”

Oh heck, put it on a Post-It on your monitor like everyone else!

Giant US government Internet spying scandal revealed!

The Washington Post and The Guardian have revealed a US government mass Internet surveillance program code-named “PRISM”. They report that the NSA and the FBI have been tapping directly into the servers of nine US service providers, including Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Yahoo, YouTube, AOL and Skype, and began this surveillance program at least seven years ago. (Imageclarifying slides)

These revelations are shaking up an international debate.

Start Page has always been very outspoken when it comes to protecting people’s privacy and civil liberties. So it won’t surprise you that we are a strong opponent of overreaching, unaccountable spy programs like PRISM. In the past, even government surveillance programs that were begun with good intentions have become tools for abuse, for example tracking civil rights and anti-war protesters.

Programs like PRISM undermine our Privacy, disrupt faith in governments, and are a danger to the free Internet.

StartPage and its sister search engine Ixquick have in their 14-year history never provided a single byte of user data to the US government, or any other government or agency. Not under PRISM, nor under any other program in the US, nor under any program anywhere in the world. We are not like Yahoo, Facebook, Google, Apple, Skype, or the other US companies who got caught up in the web of PRISM surveillance.

Here’s how we are different:

  • StartPage does not store any user data. We make this perfectly clear to everyone, including any governmental agencies. We do not record the IP addresses of our users and we don’t use tracking cookies, so there is literally no data about you on our servers to access. Since we don’t even know who our customers are, we can’t share anything with Big Brother. In fact, we’ve never gotten even a single request from a governmental authority to supply user data in the fourteen years we’ve been in business.

  • StartPage uses encryption (HTTPS) by default. Encryption prevents snooping. Your searches are encrypted, so others can’t “tap” the Internet connection to snoop what you’re searching for. This combination of not storing data together with using strong encryption for the connections is key in protecting your Privacy.

  • Our company is based in The Netherlands, Europe. US jurisdiction does not apply to us, at least not directly. Any request or demand from ANY government (including the US) to deliver user data, will be thoroughly checked by our lawyers, and we will not comply unless the law which actually applies to us would undeniably require it from us. And even in that hypothetical situation, we refer to our first point; we don’t even have any user data to give. We will never cooperate with voluntary spying programs like PRISM.

  • StartPage cannot be forced to start spying. Given the strong protection of the Right to Privacy in Europe , European governments cannot just start forcing service providers like us to implement a blanket spying program on their users. And if that ever changed, we would fight this to the end.

Privacy.

It’s not just our policy – it’s our business.
