Seasonal monsoon rains that hit Uttarakhand led to landslides and floods, disrupting communications between several settlements.

The resort town of Nainital, as well as the cities of Kaladhungi, Haldwani and Bhowali, located in the foothills of the Himalayas, have been completely cut off. Indian meteorologists warned of continued downpour over the next few days and advised residents to stay at home.

#AceWeatherDesk UPDATE: Storm Ida: New York declares state of emergency over ‘brutal flooding’ Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was “enduring an historic weather event” with “brutal flooding” and “dangerous conditions” on the roads.

Footage on social media showed water pouring into subway stations and people’s homes, and flooded roads.

New Jersey also declared an emergency and reported at least one death.

A person drowned in Passaic, New Jersey, the local mayor said, A tornado also destroyed at least nine homes in Mullica Hill, in the same state.

The roof of a postal building collapsed in Kearny, New Jersey, with people inside at the time, police said. Rescue crews are on the scene, but it’s not clear how many injuries there might be.

The National Weather Service said it had recorded 3.15 inches (8cm) of rain in New York’s Central Park in one hour.New York police have urged people to stay off the roads and the fire department has said it is responding to calls from across the city. The city’s subway has mostly closed, and many train services and flights out of New York and New Jersey are suspended.ReutersSocial media footage shows flooding in Williamsburg area of Brooklyn (Photo credit: Jaymee Sire)The remnants of Hurricane Ida have been pushing north across the east of the country, having hit Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday.Hundreds of thousands of homes in Louisiana remain without power and New Orleans is under a night-time curfew.

Four ways climate change links to extreme weather Many factors contribute to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely. The world has already warmed by about 1.2C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

(TURKEY) Flash Flooding Report: The death toll from severe floods and mudslides in Black Sea region has climbed to at least 44, as the country grapples with its second natural disaster this month #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – Aug.15: The floods, among the worst Turkey has experienced, brought chaos to northern provinces just as authorities were declaring wildfires that raged through southern coastal regions for two weeks had been brought under control.

#AceDailyNews says that Northern Turkey ‘disaster’ floods death toll rises to 44, hundreds evacuated from affected areas just as the declare wildfires are ravinging the country ……

Torrents of water tossed dozens of cars and heaps of debris along streets, destroyed bridges, closed roads and cut off electricity to hundreds of villages.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) said 36 people were killed in Kastamonu, seven in Sinop and one in Bartin. It said nine people were still in hospital in Sinop.

“This is the worst flood disaster I have seen,” Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said late on Thursday after surveying damage.

“The infrastructure in Ayancik (district) has completely collapsed. The sewage system is destroyed. There is no electricity or water,” Sinop Mayor Baris Ayhan told Reuters.

The floods and fires, which killed eight people and devastated tens of thousands of hectares of forest, struck in the same week that a UN panel said global warming was dangerously close to spiralling out of control, and warned that extreme weather would become more severe.

About 45 centimetres of rain fell in less than three days in one village near the worst-hit region, Kastamonu’s Bozkurt district, AFAD cited meteorology authorities as saying.

Hundreds evacuated from flooded areas

Footage of the flood’s first moments in Bozkurt showed the river there overflowing in a fast-moving deluge, which tore up trees and dragged away vehicles.

The small town of Bozkurt lies in a valley along the banks of the Ezine river in Kastamonu province, 2.5 kilometres from the Black Sea.

Experts in Turkey say interference with rivers and improper construction also were contributors to the massive damage in Turkey’s floods.

Geologists have said that construction narrowed the river bed and the surrounding alluvial flood plain of the Ezine stream in Kastamonu’s Bozkurt district, where the damage was most severe.

Residential buildings were built along the waterfront. During severe rains, the contracted stream has limited area in which to move and can overflow.

Speaking in Bozkurt, President Tayyip Erdogan declared the three provinces a disaster zone.

“Our country has been grappling with natural disasters for a while, as are many places in the world. This is not just our country but the United States, Canada, Germany and many other European countries,” he said.

About 2,250 people were evacuated across the region before, during and after the floods, some lifted from rooftops by helicopters.

Many were being temporarily housed in student dormitories, authorities said.

Five bridges had collapsed and many others were damaged, leading to road closures, AFAD added. Parts of the roads were also swept away.

(PHILIPPINES) #AceWeatherReport Thousands of residents fled flooded communities and swollen rivers in the Manila capital and outlying provinces Saturday after days of torrential monsoon rains, which left at least one villager dead, officials said #AceWeatherDesk report

#AceWeatherDesk says Monsoon rains flood Philippine villages, thousands evacuate as officials said they struggled to open more emergency shelters in order to allow social distancing among the displaced residents and prevent evacuation camps from turning into epicenters of #COVID19 infections. In the hard-hit city of Marikina in the capital region, nearly 15,000 residents were evacuated to safety overnight as waters rose alarmingly in a major river.

“This situation will be too difficult if there won’t be a permanent solution to flooding, especially now with the threat from the delta variant,” Marikina Mayor Marcelino Teodoro told ABS CBN News, referring to the highly contagious COVID-19 viral strain that has been detected in the country.

Philippine authorities moved thousands of residents in the capital, Manila, out of low-lying communities on Saturday as heavy monsoon rains, compounded by a tropical storm, flooded the city and nearby provinces.

Many of the residents were evacuated from flood-prone villages in Marikina overnight, depriving them of sleep, said Teodoro. He blamed years of illegal logging in nearby mountains and heavy siltation in Marikina River for constant flooding in his city.

In the mountainous northern city of Baguio, a resident died Friday afternoon after the taxi she was riding in was hit by a falling tree, police said, adding two other people in the taxi were injured. The northern Philippines has been swamped by days of monsoon rains that flooded low-lying villages and set off minor landslides.

Typhoon In-fa, which has churned off the country’s eastern coast and dumped rain on Taiwan before blowing toward China, intensified the seasonal downpours, forecasters said.

A cargo boat overturned after being lashed by strong waves Saturday close to a port in Pio Duran town in Albay province, southeast of Manila. Its 10 crewmen were rescued by police, firefighters and villagers, who used a long rope to pull the overturned boat closer to the coast, the coast guard said.

Coast guard personnel rescued several residents trapped in their houses by rising floodwaters Friday in Naujan town in Mindoro Oriental province south of Manila. As they carried the villagers through waist-high waters, the emergency crew held on to a rope to prevent themselves from being swept away by the current.

About 20 typhoons and storms batter the Philippines each year, aside from seasonal monsoon rains. The country also lies in the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, making it one of the world’s most disaster-prone nations.

(JAPAN) LATEST: More than 1,000 soldiers, firefighters and police are working to rescue survivors of a giant mudslide that ripped through a resort town south-west of Tokyo, killing at least three people and leaving more than 100 missing #AceNewsDesk report

#AceNewsReport – July.05: The area is still having heavy rainfall, but arduous rescue efforts will continue,” Mr Suga said, warning residents to watch out for more landslides.

JAPAN: Crews rescue 19 from mudslides in Atami as heavy rainfall persists in the area and Kyodo news agency reported that the confirmed death toll in the town of Atami had risen to three, with 113 people still missing. Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga earlier told reporters 19 people had been rescued and 130 homes and other buildings had been damaged ….Please act as quickly as you can to stay safe.”

Emergency workers backed by three coast guard ships were working to clear the mud from the streets of Atami and reach those believed to be trapped or carried away.

Severe weather conditions have hindered rescue efforts.

The workers were barely visible in the rainfall and thick fog except for their hard hats. Six military drones were being flown to help in the search.

The mudslide early on Saturday crashed down a mountainside into rows of houses following heavy rains that began several days ago.

Bystanders, their gasps of horror audible, filmed the scene as it unfolded.

Witnesses said they heard a giant roar and then watched helplessly as homes were gobbled up by the muddy waves.

Like many others, Mariko Hattori, an interpreter who lives a short walk away from where the tsunami-like torrent of mud struck, at first didn’t know what happened.

“The first things I noticed were lots of emergency vehicles. I didn’t know what happened at first,” she said.

“Then I was frightened when I saw the footage.”

The area of Atami where the mudslide struck, Izusan, is a seaside resort about 100 kilometres south-west of Tokyo. It is known for hot springs, a shrine and shopping streets.
